Hello all

I have a squeal sort of noise that I can hear through the gearbox opening into the car.

I’m thinking it could be something in the gearbox or possibly the exhaust vibrating on the cross member.

I hear it between 40-50mph when acceleration slightly. It disappears when not acceleration or when I put my foot down. I hear it most in 4th gear but have heard it in 3rd and 5th

Any ideas? Hoping it’s not a beating in the gearbox

Thanks

Thanks! Just had a check and the front UJ bearing has play in it. Will remove the front prop shaft and replace bearing.

Is it ok to drive the car without the front prop shaft? Only for road use

Thanks for the quick responses!

I had to drive mine for around 1 week like this. I bought the wrong sized UJ after following advice from the supplier. My Tbox made alsorts of wiered noises! It’s been fine since.....I think.

Yes, the uj was well gone! Took some work getting the cups out! But I will replace both ujs on the front shaft. Drove the car today without the shaft on and the squealing has gone.

Thanks

Technical question:

I am fitting new bearing, I press the first cup and put the circlip in, then the second cup in and it’s very tight to get the final circlip in. Once it’s in, the joint is quite tight. Almost too tight but I’m not an expert. I did take apart to check in the cup to make sure the rollers are in the right place and all looks good and second press it’s same tightness.

Is this correct and if I run it, will it free it off?

Thanks

If it’s tight, but smooth, then it should be ok. Mine were a pig to get the second circlip in. I had to use a socket and hammer to get it fully home. Checked them while doing the rebuild last week, they are still tight, but no play. Just make sure you grease them up properly.

It’s smooth but I feel it’s over tight. I feel that because removing the old cups was so hard, maybe it’s has distorted the yokes and they are slightly stretched apart?

The circlips are all in so I’m hoping it will bed in?

Thanks

As mick 1986 say's "tight but smooth" move by hand is ok. I put a blob of grease in each cap before fitting to keep rollers in place.

Must be that time of year, I had exactly the same thing last week and after having a peek in the gunk noticed that my UJ's had also gone! Swapped them all out in just under an hour, getting slowly better at this!
