Hi,

I would like to fit new springs and shocks to my 1988 200tdi converted 90 at some point as part of ongoing refurbishment - just wondered if I will need spring compressors?
I had a look on the net and some say that you need them, whilst others appear to be able to change the springs out by supporting the vehicle on it's chassis rails, and then dropping down the axle on the jack and wriggling them out with a bit of leverage.

Whats the best way??

Just buy a cheap set of compressors m8! So straight forward then! just mind your fingers!

Handy tho not essential for fronts! If I undo clamps and shox and jack chassis my rears fall out on the road! Try a search

I found spring compressers helpful when fitting medium springs... with heavy duty ones I would suggest you borrow or buy a set of Ebay.... just makes it easier.
A pry bar or crow bar is helpfull when removing and easing them in and a wood or rubber mallet for giving them a smack... Avoid a hammer... metal on metal.
When you lower the axle just watch you dont stretch the brake pipes...more often than not you can put a bit of extra downward pressure on the hub so the spring will pop out easily.
Where abouts are you? Someone may a set of spring compressers and be local to you.

why - when he doesn't need them ?

just lift the chassis with a farm jack a corner at a time and you'll be able to remove and replace the springs without needing any compression

Do that then :D
Just thought might be better for the lad & safer. as not everyone has all the equipment! if he aint got compressors he aint got large jacks!

think you'll fine peeps are MUCH more likely to have a farm jack than a set of springs compressors - farm jacks have a multitude of uses, so why buy a tool that you'll probably only use a few times a decade

Sean just ignore him, maybe wants to be the new NoB?

You don't need any form of spring compressors to change any of the springs even HD or lift kits.
