Hi all. I've just bought a Discovery 2 TD5 auto on a 51 plate. I've noticed the mode button by the gear selector doesn't do anything. There are no "S" or "M" lights on the dash when I switch on the ignition. Does this mean my car doesn't have sports/manual mode (was it an optional extra?) or does it mean there must be a loose connection/fuse etc? Any advice appreciated, I'm new here!!

The light on the dash may not work but when driving if the sport button is pressed the gearbox should hold the gears a bit longer than in normal mode, so thats an easy way to see if its working

the warning protocol might be set to manual not auto in the BCU and then no warnings...or there is a fault and they are blanked with tape inside the dash to not see them flashing cos there are a few faults when the M & S lights are flashing without much driveability effect but it won't be a good sign for a buyer if you see what i mean... you should have checked more carefully before buying it

Thanks for the replies. I have bought this car from an old guy I've known for years, it's just turned 42,500 genuine miles from new and its immaculate (I've been after it for a long time). There won't be anything dodgy about it but some things may not work as they should simply due to the fact they've never been used, and I'm not sure what's supposed to work and what's not

Being an auto the M + S lights must work on ignition self test anyway, then illuminate when manual or sport mode are selected... find somebody with tester

If you have the switches fitted they should work, read your owners manual to see how things should work.
