Hi guys, new to the site so please bare with me. Brief intro: Bought a freelander 1 td4 es yr 2001 following a break in and ultimate loss of £20k after insurance payout and perfectly servicable but worthless isuzu trooper stolen in process. The equipment had to take priority so we could get our business back up and running so the car went and was replaced with afore mentioned freelander with A/T tyres so we had a road car and something to get to and around the smallholding.
Got stuck yesterday in the mud with water bowser in tow. Any idea why the front wheels were spinning regardless of high or low revs but no drive engaging via vcu to rear. Driven defenders of road and towing in my time but know very little about freelanders and how they should respond.

Do a search on vcu's!
My money will be on it either being removed and its only two wheel drive or its had a freelander spares one fitted that's useless and its only two wheel drive!

Mmmm! sounds like more expense. Thanks I'll get underneath later and see what I find. May be back on later for recomendations for sourcing spares.

Everything seems to be where it should be when you look underneath, but same thing happened today, front wheels spin no drive to rear but the tc light flashed up briefly for the first time. There's almost to much info out there for the freelander virgin so correct me if i'm wrong: VCU liquid not solidifying is rare ( how do I check ), tc light should come on if a wheel starts to spin ( done it once ). Did wonder if there may be a sensor somewhere faulty if tc doesn't appear to be functioning but then a viscous liquid wouldn't be affected by this would it. A bit confused as to where to start and what to swap first mainly because I don't fully understand the order and speed at which things should happen. Any advice?

Jack one of the back wheels up, and with a socket and bar on the hub nut you should be able to turn the wheel with a bit of effort.
This should just turn the rear propshaft.
If it turns very easily, and only the rear propshaft turns, suspect an iffy VCU, if the rear and front propshafts rotate, suspect IRD.
Firms are now selling " 2 wheel drive " VCU's and IRD's
