I have a 94 300 tdi auto without the edc.Do I have a spider unit fitted ? Ive found a black box behind the panel in the drivers foot well. Is this the spider unit ? If it is, it could be the answer to my starting problems.

You have a single button fob it's only the twin button fob systems that have a 'spider' even then the very last 300 series models don't have one.
If the box u found was in the passenger footwell/glove box area it would be the alarm/central locking ecu. I don't know what you have found..

No you don't have a spider unit fitted. Weren't fitted to 94 vehicles.
What sort of starting problems?

Had a problem in the past .when warm after a long journey, turn off engine , try to start five minutes later ,nothing ! wait a few more minutes, starts !. Now its just nothing.Headlights stay bright when attempting to start so must be the circuit.

Have you ever cleaned the engine earth strap connections to the chassis. If not they're well overdue and could help.
Also your starter could be a bit suspect, particularly the brushes and possibly a sticking solenoid.

The black box in drivers foot well looks similar to the one in vivnaps piccy.Tried hitting the starter ,didn,t work.Ive done the battery earth and starter to chassis earth [cleaned and re fitted] but nothing else yet.Not cleaned the starter end earth yet.Ill go see if I can find the exciter wire with the spade end on it and check that.

Bloody hell its freezing out there ! Just tried to move the earth strap on the starter ,it budged a bit so I triedto start her up.Turned the key and she tried to start, only starter made a rat tat tat noise. So I took the earth off the starter and cleaned it up and put it back. Eagerly I jumped in to see if Id cracked it.NOTHING! :(

Well folks Im back inside by the stove :) I must have done something because now when I try to start her up Im getting a machine gun noise from the starter. Do you think its fooked.

i take it that noise is comming from the starter then ????
if it is it cant be the spyder playing up

if the starter is making that noise i would go for low battery power to start with and a knackerd starter solinoid after :)

"machine gun noise " I've had that a few times when the car battery has been flat it's the various relays or solinoid chattering.
So you have a good battery don't you? if you are unsure dip a battery tester or a hydrometer into each cell and see what the reading is, that will give you the condition of each cell.
Having 12+ volts between the terminals is no good if you don't have the current.

Praise Jesus, Allah and Buda !:D And anyone else up there. It started ! It must have been just a bad earth or one of the other connections. The battery I had on was a spare my dad give me[he told me it was good and fully charged] Turns out it wasn,t  Put my old battery on after charging it and off it went :D Thank god I didn,t spend anything on parts. Thanks to all who helped .special thanks to discool .Been off the road for about a month with that and the water pump going.Time to go out for a drive now. Cheers;)

Well done rollin danny :clap2: and now the earth connections have had a "shake down" you won't be having any problems there in the future so some good has come out of if.
