Hey guys.

The speedo and odometer (I always called it a mileometer, but apparently I'm wrong) weren't working on my 1990 110 Defender. I've just changed the speedo cable which has fixed the speedo but the odometer is still not spinning.
Has anyone get any ideas on how to fix this problem?

Apparently my AA cover is void if the odometer isn't working. I promised the missus a wild camping holiday over Easter and I wouldn't want to go far without breakdown and relay cover. Mainly because of an intermittent fault that I just can't track down which means Lionel (our landy) just occasionally refuses to start, and then starts on the button as and when he feels like it.
Anyway... That's a problem to sort in the future.
Back on topic....
My odometer:

.........?

Cheers in advance,

Cheers James.
The trouble is that they've already got a reading of my odometer, so if it's at the same reading they'll know it's broken.

When you say "speedo head" do you mean the speedo unit itself? sorry for my ignorance, I'm not much of a mechanic.....

I had the same issue with mine, ended up swapping for a new speedo. Record the mileages of the two units, and you're fine.

yes everthing else must be fine or needle wouldnt register

Will be the speedo unit itself

Might be able to take it out, see if it's a stuck or broken cog tooth and turn it past the problem, but likely will need replacing

Okay.
Cheers for the help guys.
On the case for finding a replacement speedo unit now.

Just rang landrover and they want nearly £400 for a new one!!!

Not sure what to do about the mileage If I buy a second hand unit... Would I need to inform the dvla?

Does anyone know of a good Landy breakers in Manchester?

Thanks for all the info guys.

I've been in touch with the AA and they've told me that in order for me to be covered I need a new speedo (set at zero) and this needs to bit fitted by a garage as proof of no misdeeds.
I've ordered one and booked into the garage.
This place was the cheapest I could find:
L. R. Series - specialists in land rover, land rover series and range rover - gearbox, axle, transmission parts, spares and major units
£91 inc next day delivery and VAT.

Thanks for all your help, today would have been much more stressful without you,

Psy.

I have the same problem, but oddly the speedo is working, but the mileage and trip mileage arent turning at all.

Stuck on 159999

Tell the AA in that case to get stuffed and go with the RAC, and give them the milage on a 2nd hand speedo... Easy job to change so why should you have to take it to a garage, unless you call out the AA and get them too do it...

My needle works, my mileage works but my trip meter doesn't!

Thought about sending it away for a service ... till I found out the price!!:eek:

You could always try talking to these people Linky

I had a similar issue with my speedo. Ended up buying a new one. I fitted it myself which was a 20 minute job. I paid £45 for mine on ebay.
Don't know what you pay for your insurance but next time try Direct LIne. I found them much cheaper.
