Hello,

My speedo stopped working the other day. It was erratic for a week or so and now rarely budges (occasionally it will move a couple of mm for a second). It's the electronic type and the car is a 1990 model and LHD middle eastern spec.

The car is now with my competent but non LR specialist mechanic in Germany.

Other symptoms were that the exclamation mark warning light came on and that the idling wasn't quite right and the car often dies at traffic lights etc.

I read that this indicates a problem with the speed sensor transducer. This has been removed and when it's turned it changes resistance. Does this mean that it works? I know that it should shoot 12v 6 times per turn of the wheel. Obviously it won't send any volts if is has no power to it!

My mechanic has asked me to find out more about it, as he can't speak English and German language support is lacking for these old girls! The next thing he wants to check is to see if the transducer shaft is being turned. Assuming that it is, where exactly do the wires go after that. One is green the other is yellow. He says they disappear into a big chucky mass of cables.

Where do we look?

thanks so much.

inner wing, near bulkhead, left hand side when looking from the front. largish round connector.

Both green and yellow wires go to the connector there? Is it just a connector with 2 wires, just so I know what to look for? Thanks.

yes, 7 or so wires from memory, more cylindrical than round. same as rear lights or trailer lights connector. smaller than a 35 mm film case comes in black. same type of connector as other end.

Found that, it was obvious! Where do the wires go after that? They go into the car on the passenger side (it's LHD remember) and then seem to disappear into the centre of the dashboard. They must go via an ECU before the get to the speedo itself, surely? Where? I thought the ECU was under the seat.

Sounds like vehicle speed sensor as the speed sensor when on an automatic controls return to base idle in anti stall manner at least in 3.9 form (rover p5 3.9 efi conversion)

Yes, mine's a 3.9 and Automatic. After the connector by the bulkhead, do the wires go to an ECU? Where? The speed sensor appears to be doing something, whether it's doing it right or being turned in the first place is another matter.

id look at the speedo cable...they fail after 20 years or so... its the cable off the transducer to the transfer case
