Not many miles after an MoT (passed Phew). Coincidence probably.

Reading old posts, it seems likely cause is the sensor mounted on the transfer box so I'll get under and have a look at the wires and plug as soon as I can. If they look OK, is there any way of testing the sensor before forking out for a new one?

Meanwhile I'll be driving without a speedo and having to use the tacho to give me speed instead. What engine speed corresponds to 30 mph with the box in top gear? I reckon it must be about 1250 rpm, does this sound right?

they are a common failure ,ive got a used one you can try

30mph in 4th gear is 1500 rpm... my speedo is having a little rest at the moment n worked that one out... the others I'm not to worried about, dual carriage ways I sit at about 2250 which is about 55

depending on the size of your wheels.

My speedo is having a rest too, i worked it out for 30, 40, 50 and 70 with both sets of wheels - although i run the sat nav on long journey's to help out

(2500 is near enough 60 on "normal" wheels and 70 on the mud tyres)

oh yea... normal wheels! my bad

whats what I use my sat nav for too... I find they show slower than speedo's though so I drop off a bit when I see camera's just incase

Well b****r me, it's working again today! But I reckon it's bound to fail again soon so thanks for all your tips, they'll soon enough come in handy.
Googled on testing the sensor and it looks easy. Will get back to JamesMartin if I then need a used one on the cheap.

The connecting plug may not be as waterproof as it should be, so unplug clean and replace.
