So, even a simple job like changing the spark plugs is difficult! I have looked everywhere, tried many, but I cannot find a spark plug socket with a thin enough wall to remove the plugs. It's the M62 4.4 V8 - anyone who has one of these wafer thin sockets, please point me in the right direction where I can acquire one!

Think you may find a standard 14mm plug socket is the wrong size. There are three sizes of plug socket 10mm with a 16mm hex. 12mm with a 18mm hex. 14mm with a 21mm hex.

I assume when you say 10, 12 & 14 your talking thread Diameter right?!

No there is a very strange way of sizing plug sockets. A standard plug, known as a 14mm spark plug, has a hexigon of 13/16 or 21mm. However some 14mm plugs have smaller hex on them so you need to use a 12mm 18mm hex plug socket. Or in some cases a 10mm plug socket with a 16mm 5/8" hex. So a plug socket marked up 10mm will be an extended 16 mm or 5/8" socket. A plug socket marked up 12mm will have a 18mm hex. So get all the three sizes for your tool kit.

I think I'd do as you suggest and get one of each - fecking confused!!
