the ones that wrote off an engine were in a nissan almera, the ones that played up in mine were in my old bmw e30 325i.

they are ****e, most know it and i wont ever buy them again.

tbh it worried me enough when the dealer fitted bosch twin electrodes to my bmw 540i, I might take em out and put ngk in for peace of mind

I'm suprised halfrauds didn't try to sell you one of those 'magic' dizzy caps they use to sell a few years back (and apparently were all the rage??!).....those transparent ones where you can see their crappy rotor arms breaking down and the cap arc like a good un!....
I drive past a Halfrauds every day on the way t work.... can't remember the last time I went in, let alone buy anything

halfords is ideal because its next door to us, they have a good range of bits and pieces like you say, theyre open til late and trade card brings back normal prices.

regards the plugs, ive just ordered 16 genuine land rover plugs off ebay RTC3812 from a guy selling off new old stock, a quid each with free delivery.

see how they go next time around but thought it was worth a punt.

are oem plugs champion or ngk?

i should be able to tell when they arrive from the construction.

cheers

"are oem plugs champion or ngk?" For RRC and D1s it's Champion, haven't a clue on other LR vehicles.

RTC3812 are Champion N9YC and the slightly cooler plug ERR3799 are Champion RN11YC

champion on the older motors the never jag engines are ngk plugs.
just as a little info few years ago i worked at a pug dealer the upgrade for poor running was borsch over the peugeot spec plugs worked fine but they were single elctrodes

Yes I got them and they are champion N9YC, thanks discool.

When you say that the RN11YC are a cooler plug, what exactly does this mean? I have actually used these the past two times I bought plugs cos thats what it quotes in Haynes.

Having read bad moods about champion I decided to get NGK this time. Now that I have these 16 N9YC I am unsure what to do. Will they be better for me than the RN11YC? And what about in comparison to the BPR6ES i have in currently?

Thanks for any comments :)

cooler plugs have more of the ceramic insulator around electrode in contact with outer, hotter plugs less, allowing plug to run hotter burns off crap ,hottter running engines like the leaner burn ones nowadays need cooler plugs

Cheers JM, so basically my old sooty v8 would appreciate the old spec hotter R9YC.

only gave a quid each per plug so I might as well keep them I guess, but if they're gonna expire quicker than a 2 quid NGK then it's not really worth it!

Same style and thread etc so the 9s are direct replacement.
As u say the 11s are what's recommended and what was fitted by LR and by dealer service depts and all I had fitted to my disco.

I'm now running on 9s they are only two grades hotter so no big problems but cold starting (first thing in the morning) has improved not so in the firing up but I always had to wait 15 or 20 seconds to let the engine 'wakeup' before moving off, if I didn't wait then it was just lumpy, not a big issue at 20 seconds max after that it would run clear.

So with the 9s fitted there's no such thing as 'wakeup' which I now happy with and they work without any problems at all speeds (I went to Germany with them fitted).
I wouldn't have found this out but only I had a full service carried out a an indi LR garage in Kent and that's what was fitted replacing 20,000mile old Champions.
Sparkplugs have no interest to me and i'm not an expert in the product so I can't say why there's an improvement. There's lots of info by plug suppilers on the www such as sparkplugs.co.uk on the type, design and make up of plugs.

Bottom line: fit your new plugs and see if u can find any difference.:)

Fair shout mate yeah. I'll roll with the NGK for the time being and see how they go. The champion started to fail after around a year, so if they last that long at least we're on a par :)
