Hello,
I have the following spare wheel carrier on my defender.

Does the central U shaped thing (sorry!) serve a purpose or can it be removed so I can fit one of the new steel wheel covers?

probably for putting a padlock through

you can loose it but it supports wheel center while lining up holes

Just to let people who might stumble across this thread.

I bought one of those covers and it does fit, even with the 'U' hoop still in place.
However, make sure you don't over tighten the bolts like I did which resulted in a small crack right in the middle!
