As the title says really, i've got a twittering noise coming from the engine bay somewhere but not when sat still or parked up with the engine running. It's worse when slowing down with foot off the gas. I was wondering if the water pump was on the way out. Your opinions and diagnosis please.
If it is the pump are they easy to replace?

thats probably one of yr air bags or lines leaking slightly and the suspension ecu is evening the car out as it drops. have a look at yr bags if they look flakey then they prolly want changing. to check the air lines put car up full and turn off remove key and spray with soapy water( not your key, your air lines) if theres a leak you will see bubbles, you can also spray the airbags too. be sure to wipe water off as it could corrode the rubber further!!

the eas pump is in a black box in the engine bay on passenger side. its marked "eas"

have a look on Range Rover P38/4.0/4.6 Common Problems and Fixes for a more in depth version of above!!!

Thanks Gav but i think its definately the water pump or pulley giving up as when i come off the gas there's a vibration now to add to the budgie effect. Also doing it on and off the gas now so it's going in tomorrow to Jamesons for mending. How much should i be looking at if it is the pulley or pump?

i pais £50 for the pump inc delivery and £25 to fit it but that was just a local garage.

Thanks john, but i found out this morning that it is something to do with transmission so best go speak to the bank manager.
Wish it was the pump now.

how did you find its to so with the transmission? brakes can make a kind of twitering or rotational squeak!

Took it to Jameson 4x4 this morning and he came out for a test drive with me (he was driving) and said it felt like some pulse sensor in tranny which falls apart. Hes having a proper look tomorrow. He also had a look at the belt, pump and pulley and all was ok. Tomorrow i will know more!

just asking as mine had the common brke problem where the sliders seize in the bracket due i think to manufacture defect/tolerance/machining. once i had freed them and replace one i broke slapped a bit of copperslip grease on em and new pads it went away. very cheap fix and worth checking even if its not the source of the squeak. if you need spare sliders look for rover 75's front calipers as they are the same slider and i believe the same caliper although the ones i found had also seized or would only move a few mm on the same slide pin. the other one in the caliper was free and easy to remove and fell in my pocket by accident.

Cheers Gav, great for future ref. The drivetrain is struggling and there is noticable vibration both when the gas pedal is floored and released. My first thought was tranny related but the squeeking seemed to be coming from too close to the front of the motor for me to assume it would be transmission. How wrong i was. Thanks anyway. I will keep you updated.

Well there's good news and theres even better news. The good news is it was only the front prop uj's and the better news is it's a cheap fix so no need to empty my jar of magic beans just yet. Big heads up for Steve at Jameson 4x4 in Birmingham great bloke to deal with and even gave me a lift home after i dropped my rr off with him. Prices are very good too. Cheers Steve!!!

Hi AntS70,i've got the same problem, although mine is more like a jingeling coming from the front of the car and recently it has lost some of it's power on accelerating, also there is a new noticable vibration.

Could you explain to me what "front prop uj's" are please

cheers
