Hi folks, me again! (sorry)

This rolling restoration of mine seems to be pulling up problems all the time, i think ive taken on a little project here so probably gonna need answers to a lot of things in the coming few weeks,

ive got 2 quite prominent problems at the minute,

1. It has a pretty harsh vibration throughout the whole car at around 2000 rpm, its got a very smooth auto box and sweet sounding td5 engine and at any other rpm it seems smooth and quiet but from 2000 rpm upto about 2800rpm the car vibrates as tho the prop/exhaust/diff etc is touching the body of the car! (i think you certainly feel it a lot more in the back!) ive been underneath and tried to see if anything stands out but i cant find anything, it also does it if car is in park or neutral and i rev it (so not under load or in drive!) what could this be? it changes gear very smooth and selects gears without clunking etc.

2. the starter motor has started to CLICK when im trying to start the car....now im under the impression this is a common problem and ive read that theres a easy cheap repair that can be done without even taking the starter off the car?

heres a picture to show just what im trying to save and bring back to her sparkling best!

The first thing to check with vibration on the D2 is the condition of the rubber coupling doughnut on the back end of the rear prop shaft. They can become weak and in many cases start to fail completely.
If it has to be replaced use only those marked as GKN units.
I'm unsure about auto units so you'll have to wait for some more suggestions.

thanks! :) i did have a quick look over that earlier and it doesnt seem to be so bad, ive had a lot of old e36 bmw's and they have the same kind of bush near the gearbox and they ALWAYS wear out so its one of the first things i checked, i suppose it wont harm to take it off and look, but im getting to the point where i would like to stop just replacing everything i come across and actually find whats wrong haha

oil from injector loom will cause engine to rock, sort of misfire effect, this in turn will make the whole car shake ! I had the same problem.

ah, i'll go check now! if it does have oil can it be cleaned out with a contact cleaner? also, would it not cause the car to run a bit rubbish at all times, mine idels super smooth and once past 2800rpm its smooth as silk :S

I think brake and clutch cleaner is ok but I would ask a pro first. Also if it has got oil in there you will almost certainly need to change loom.

It's inside rocker cover, not too hard to do. plus when checking red connector you have to disconnect earth lead. ECU has just one screw to undo then lift ecu out.

That's good to know you are not too far from me, I need to resync one of my keys plus change setting for door entry so it disables the need for key fob. THAT'S TO SMACO2 from dave in Dewsbury

Hi
I have the same issue with my 2001 auto td5. I've created a few threads on the issue but no real feedback that pinpoints the problem. There are threads on other forums, one that runs to 39 pages on this same problem, but yet again no real result.
I've spent lots of time and money trying to sort mine but am coming to the conclusion it's something the auto does after it has a 100000 miles or so on the clock. I think I've changed every conceivable part that might be causing the horrible vibration. This last weekend I removed the harmonic balance weight from the transfer box and it does seem to have moved the vibration up the rev range a little.
I can't get a true picture of the result yet as I also the week before fitted the CDL changer from a D1 that bolts onto the gearbox and the vibration caused by that is horrendous, so that is coming off as soon as I get a chance to strip it. There is a rumble on my motor, driving or stationary that seems to come in at the at 2250 revs. It's almost a misfire but having checked everything a hundred times I just cannot locate the issue.
I recently thought it could be the gearbox flex plate but having had a camera inside the bell housing and had my local Landy garage take a look there are no signs of cracking of the plate. So if anyone has had the same problem and managed to solve it please let us know.

wow! seems like i might just live with it for now haha, theres bigger fish to fry with this car first!

ive looked at the red ECU plug and there is/was little to no oil in or on it, i cleaned off what was on it and plugged it back in, the car is still as it was before i checked it, so no issues there.

And I have lots of bear tokens to give away. Wink, wink nudge say no more!!
The that's no problem ,can soon do that. Drop me a PM

Re
Re the starter problem check the thin wire at the connection to the starter. Give it a good clean up. It's a known fault and caught myself and others out. An easy fix.

cheers mate, iver ordered the repair kit for £14, if im gonna get under the car i might as well do something under there and know i dont have to get under to look at the starter motor again any time soon lol. this cars gonna destroy any savings i thought i had! haha

tried cleaning contacts on starter today and it made no difference, so im happy that the repair kit will be the thing to fix it! realised today that the vibration noise only really happens at about 2200rpm to 2500rpm so i'll live with it for now :)
