if just got a discovery 200 tdi it will only drive if u put it in 4 hight or 4 low i was hoping it was a half shaft
but now i dont no i jacked it up today and both front wheels spin freely when in gear is this more the front diff or transfer box help would be more appreciated need to get it sorted asap

main box layshaft bearing collapsed by the sound of it.
edit.
both front wheels spinning freely when jacked up is the diff doing its job.

with out diff lock there's no drive at all if u put it in 4 hight or low it will drive but im going on what the guy sed when i bought it that he cliped the kerb with the o/s/f wheel then only way it would drive is in 4 hight or low

you have more than one problem here then.
snapped halfshaft is likely.

either 2 problems or drive in 4th is irrelevant and its just diff lock that makes the difference

cant get me head round this bit, can you expand it a bit :D

as you said earlier the only way you can only have drive in 4th but no other gear is no drive thru layshaft ,diff lock would only relate to an axle issue ,so 2 problems or poor info

no sorry it will only drive if u put i think its the diff lock if its put in 4 hight or 4 low
i think the gear box is ok as you can get all gears or is it me being daft first time iv had a discovery all i no if u put the the small gear stick in hight light comes on the dash and u can drive it and have all gears same as if u put in low range u can get all gears

i see ,there is no 4 high or low as such, only high or low and diff lock or not ,it is only 4wd

broken shaft or diff then.

Surly if it will drive in high or low there's nothing wrong with it! I am obviously missing something? Does he think there's 2 wheel drive and putting the transfer in neutral?

Its most likely a diff,cv joint or shaft, take it out of diff lock and handbrake off. Stick your foot on the brake put it in first gear and lift the clutch. Have someone look underneath to see which prop shaft is spinning. Whichever prop spins that's the axle your problem is with. The other way is to turn the car off. Stick it in gear and diff lock on then jack up 1 wheel at a time and try to spin it. If you can spin the wheel that also shows its that axle. Then its just a case of stripping it down to try snd find which part has failed. Sometimes on the front when spinning the wheel by hand you can hear a crunching or something from one side. That could be a sign of which side is broken if its a shaft or cv.

Also when talking about where you have your gearstick there is no 4high 4 low etc. Its always 4 wheel drive. By mentioning 4 it can confuse people into thinking your talking about gearing.

If the stick is back its high forward is low right is diff lock off left is diff lock on so you have 4 positions:
High range diff lock off
High range diff lock on
Low range diff lock off
Low range diff lock on.

Cheers

Landrover 45 ... have you pulled the rear halfshafts like we have already suggested the first time you posted this or is this just a repeat thread to waste peoples time answering again??

http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f16/help-please-247586.html

pull the rears we have already said its a 5 minute job, then come back and let us know..... you will get a dozen reasons but you need to heed advice and check first or people will keep adding to the list

as has already been said diffs are doing their job if both wheels rotate when jacked up if not you would have a hells game cornering..... that's why people fit 'locking diffs' for serious off road work

If you really cant be bothered doing this quick check you could always put in difflock jack up the front axle on stands and see if you can drive forwards... not very safe but it will point out if rears are okay... then do the same with rear jacked and front on ground... NOT AT ALL ADVISABLE but may narrow down if the prob is front or rear faster than the 5 mins it would take to pull shafts

Cheers Steve
