Hi fellas! This is my first post here and I have a couple of questions about the Defender :)


I'm thinking about buying a Land Rover Defender, yet my decision must be vry well thought because here in Portugal 4x4 vehicle prices are not like in the UK. To give you an example check out these prices:

- Defender 130 Crew Cab S: 36.000 GBP
- Defender 90 SW E: 56.100 GBP
- Defender 110 SW E: 67.800 GBP


Wicked... huh?


Anyway, I'm thinking about getting a Defender 90 Soft-Top E, or a 90 Hard-Top E, or even a Defender 110 Crew-Cab E.


But I have a question regarding fuel. The Defender is going to be used mainly on the city, so lets just say that it would be 90% for city use and 10% for off-road use. And yes, fuel consumption can be an issue.

So my question is: is there any way I can make the Defender have a lower fuel consumption? Is there any kind of tuning we can make on the vehicle to do that?

I'm used to consumptions of about 5.5 to 6.5 liters / 100 Km, and changing to 12 liters / 100 Km can be harsh...




And one final question. If I buy the soft-top version of the Defender 90, is there any way I could transform it to a hard-top later?

Whats the E mean?

The Land Rovers arn't that good on fuel, one of the UK made one do 45 MPG a while back but i can't find the article now. Dont know how that translates to l/100k.

You can drive them carefully, but the return isn't much higher.

And as to those prices... Wow... Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy one in the UK while the market is weaker and export it? Surely? You could make a living out of it!

As for the roof conversions, really easy job - with all the bits under 3 hours, no bother at all. Everything just bolts on and off - i mean everything. It isn't like your normal car where bits are welded etc, really easy.
 
something with the aerodynamicxs of a brick and weighs shed loads is never gonna be your 1st choice as a daily commutor,but for something that will put a massive smile on your face every time you drive it the defender delivers this by the bucket load
 
My 90 is my only car, im a poor student. Mine gets used pretty much daily, although no interstellar miles.

Love it, every time i have to drive something else for any length of time, i always get back into the LR and think nah... Ill stick to my 90 thanks :D

Probably yes, but... you have right-hand drive, we - the rest of the world! - have left-hand drive ;)
 
Also bear in mind that I believe conversion from RHD to LHD isn't that massive a job and would certainly cost less to convert a UK RHD than the LHD Portugal cost of the vehicle alone. You can also pick up LHD vehicles here in the UK.

generally tdi give 9.8l/100km . on a run .
were your quoted mileage for what you are used to long run mileage as not many vehicles will give that round town .
No matter how you tune a defender you are not going to do much as you are having to move a heavy vehicle from rest to speed frequently and using lower gears . They are already considered to be about the most fuel efficient of all the full size 4wd . Ask any L Cru$r driver , So the only way is buy the lightest landrover you can . or forget about it and buy a Terios jimny etc
