Hi
I have just brought a Series 3 as I have wanted one for a while. I've been lurking around this forum for a while now and have seen it has some very good info to offer, so I thought I would post this.
So it starts with me buying this:

Now I was very pleased with this, although I was very suspicious of the wacking great turbo on the 2.25 diesel and it smoked a bit.
I changed put a new rad and thermo in as the old radiator leaked like a sieve and then I changed the injectors for reconed ones, all good. I started it up and theres a terrible knocking coming from it, sump off and check big end bearings, ohh dear!

Bad. Now this is where I would like some advice, what else is likely to be broken, because of this? I will take the turbo off anyway so presumably that would be advisable anyway. Is it worth replacing the bearings for the sake of £15 to see what its like, or is it dead?
Also as you can see in the first picture the rear is too low, I think the rear springs are flattened as it has been parked like that for 2 years. I jacked the rear up and have oiled and greased them liberally inbetween the leaves but the arse end falls down again with so much as a flys weight. This is a pick of the rear spring hangers that I think should be at a 90 degree angle, not like these ones.

Last question, I promise. How much would you pay for a 2.5N/A with a 6month warranty fitted?
p.s I put my screwdriver through the passenger footwell today:eek::(

Thanks for listening(if you did)

No nor me, the garage I bought it off thought it was a 2.5.
Heres the engine

Sorry for bad quality these were off my phone

Oi Johnny :p you reading this ?

And yeah one weird looking engine, the smoke could be from over fuelling someone could have attempted to up the fuel to match the turbo but went a bit too far or a stretched timing chain ?

oi evil ferk off te yer v8 and leave this poor fekker alone its fookin plain to see that the turbo in the pics is older than the hills and is ****ing oil out the intake side meaning its oil float bearing seal is shagged

i bet if he takes that cast iron hairdryer off the fooker and sorts his shells out itll be a good un and yes it is a 2.286 N/A engine to start with ;););)

Snigger :D

Maybe its rusted in style to match the age of the series

I'll be attempting to re-time it using the wammers guide soon :)

You reckon?
Ill get the new bearings and try it then, in N/A form that is.

if the piston crowns arent split ,200 tdi would be the best fix
I did think that would I cant find many 200tdis that have a warranty like the 2.5N/A that I've found

Don't dump the turbo,if it's one the kits from the 60s, they are quite rare and sought after.

It may be worth taking the motor apart to see if anything else has gone with the turbo and big ends. If its just those, it will be quite cheap.

Oh, and go for a 200 rather than 2.5na. I have one in mine and it's hardly much better than the 2.25.

Worcestershire

Yea, ill ask the bloke whos got the 2.5 if he has any 200s around, he is a professional restorer. ive heard the 300tdi fits aswell, with a bit of a jiggle?
2.25 and 2.5 and 200tdi are all basically the same block 300 is based on same block but has more differences like vac pump at rear ,drivers side eng mount holes

I had heard of those, but I doubt thats on mine as its from 1981 and the turbo is not that old. The only reason I would put the 2.5 in is because that there is one ready and it will be fitted, with warranty.

What do you guys reckon to my rear springs?

Right found a 300Tdi thats going to go in sometime in the next two weeks. What do you reckon to these rear spring hangers, should they be on a right angle?
