Hi,
I'm looking for advice on buying a TD5:

https://www.gumtree.com/p/land-rover/land-rover-defender/1325350811

The underside of the doors are pretty rotten, there's a hole near the diesel cap (see pictures) and there's bubbling of the paint around the windscreen in the usual areas. Are these areas quite cheap and easy to fix or are these major red flags? The chassis and engine and everything else seems to be immaculate.

Would appreciate the help, thanks.

I see that you are from Scotland, you would be better off looking further south for a Land Rover

I budgeted 8-12K. I'm looking for a newer TD5 but any age really as long as it's good condition. Is my budget unrealistic?

No not at all, buy the best you can afford though

2nd one, seller is no relation to me!

You might have to travel a bit mate to find a good one.

I only linked double cabs cuz they were in my viewed items on ebay and theyre the best anyway ;):p

I should of specified, I'm looking for a 90 CSW or panel van.. sorry!

Be prepared to travel, find what you want for your budget, ask loads of questions before you travel then go and look at it, be prepared to walk away. I travelled to Edinburgh (from Warrington) to buy my 90.

There are a few on Autotrader but most are the older 10p engine Td5, these 2 caught my eye, the first one is a trader but in Bristol, the second is private but nearer to you in Edinburgh:

Hi it is known for stuff to rust out faster in Scotland than down south where it’s warmer and have less rain , if I was you I would travel for the right one

I looked for one for ages. Most over priced with loads of miles on them and some are wreckes. I too wanted a 90 CSW then a 300Tdi 90 CSW popped up on gumtree. It was MOT'd and it's just passed another MOT not too far from me and wasn't over priced. Needs a little - hole in bulkhead, door bottoms, new rear door but I knew what it needed. So keep looking and one will eventually come up for the right price and condition. Bear in mind that they all need a little work unless you buy a pristine example, but you know how much that'll cost you.

Looks very nice! It does have 162k miles though.. I think I'd rather pay a bit more for less mileage. I have tried Lix Toll but they seem to be charging a premium for nothing special. It looks like I'll have to travel down to London.

Buy on condition more than mileage ;) the newest td5s are about 14 years old now!

There's quite a few round the Midlands you might not have to go as far as London. Just keep looking, don't buy the first one you see

The first one in Bristol also caught my eye yesterday. I've phoned him up to see more pictures! I think I may have to travel further south because the price seems a lot fairer

I test drove one in the north of Scotland recently and the drivers door was buffeting pretty badly at 45/50mph which caused a lot of noise in the cabin. I know TD5's can be loud but I literally could hardly hear the guy. Is this normal or is this due to dodgey door hinges?
