I have Solex 40 PAIO carbs as fitted to Series 2 and 2a land rovers. After a run and when I have switched the engine off I can hear a gurgling in the carb which I have checked and it is petrol flooding out of the carb into the inlet tract. I have checked all the normal things i.e fuel pressure and float chamber height and floats etc.
Is this a normal problem and is there anything which can be done to avoid it ? Most of the fuel in the float chamber seems to end up in the inlet manifold/tract. This can give a rich mixture for restarting which is not always ideal and I suspect a lot of it probably goes down past the piston and into the oil overnight.
Any ideas please ?
Many thanks for any input.

Solex carbs were renound for warping and would need replacing with either a good original Zenith carb or a Weber carb think you will be lucky to find a decent Solex, hope this helps

the solex on my s1 leaks fuel sometimes when I switch the engine off I just ignore it now :D

I think you can get kits to refurb them, there are people who will do it for you but last time I looked it wasn't cheap

Thanks very much for the replies. I want to keep the Solex. The Solex is new old stock so I dont really want to replace it. I was thinking of fitting a switch for the pump so that you could switch off the pump a minute or so before switching off the engine - thereby reducing the fuel left in the float chamber. Before doing this I just wondered whether there was any other alternative ?
Thanks.
