Hi Gary, not wanting to make it seem like I am teaching you to suck eggs, but something to be aware of Gramps.:p

I guess you are going to chuck the l'ill ones in the back at some point ( It is a 7 seater init?)

Then you might want to get something kid proof, or else it will not last long.

so is it ok to then leave the solar panel fitted permanently with the engine running , if it has a protector fitted which if i'm starting to understand will isolate the solar panel anyway as the alternator will be charging the battery up

will wait for the other post , ref pics etc

not at all, i always prefer to ask and plan what i wish to do, so am more than happy to take advice , as at the end of the day will get better results and all done properly , but also not going backwards or as u quite rightly say , buying something that may be redundant in the future

good call ref the back seats , would put the dogs on the back 6-7 seat, or just leave them folded down so they have the entire boot , grandchildren on the middle seat , so thought the back side boot window for the solar panel in theory should be the safest place,

have already got the cooler will write down the watts reg

then if i may then be able with help work everything out to give me the base sofar watts needed plse

thks so much for taking the time posting the pics , perfect as that's the kind of thing i wish to do

not sure what type wiring etc i have regarding the tow bar electrical socket and tonwork out what size solar panel i need ??
 
do you want to run it from the charger, or just top up a storage battery?

100W to run it, 20W to top up a battery

that's a point , did wonder from ur pic what the far right terminals were, assume that to run power off the solar panel

will have to ponder about that , just going to make a cuppa

many thks , what power capacity is ur panel plse

so really my main goal would be to protect the cranking battery , keeping it charged whilst the engine isn't running by the solar panel

doing the work in stages , mainly down to cost

First work out size of solar panel wattage and how to connect it to a permanent live, i.e. towing socket or direct to cranking battery

1 ) fit a solar panel with protector

2) fit an aux deep cell battery along with a split charge system
A) unsure to either fit the solar to the aux battery or keep on the cranking battery

be able to if cranking battery was drained , to have the facility of connecting the aux battery temp to start the disco

hopefully that makes some sense , ?????

alternator is 150amps

I have cheap 10 to 20 watt solar panals to my shed roof keeping my jetski and boat battery's on charge (like a float charge )
however they do not regulate very well ...eventually the voltage creeps up and keeps going until the battery's boil if left unattended for long periods ....the information of the solar panel of voltage is crucial ..my 10 w solar panel can put out 18 volts but amperage is low

when adding in a solar panel to a car its best to work out power demands is needed ..once you source a nice size solar panel .... then the correct regulator to suit that desired voltage panel

I have a 200 w solar panel @ 38 volts on the roof of my D2 in Australia where the sun is never shy ....if I connect this direct to the car batts is not good this needs to be regulated yes it will charge but eventually cook the battery'
try and stay away from cheap ebay so called regulators they also do not regulate that well
also when purchasing a regulator make sure the regulator can work in the voltage range ......ie a regulator that has a max of 18 tvolts input will be no good connected to a 38 volt panel







here is mine
this panel and regulator is hard wired its a GSL charger .....i don't need to disconnect when engine is running ..the reason being the regulator is doing its job....... this system is capable of running a weaco fridge /freezer on it own ... the battery only acts as a buffer on fridge compressor start up only
