Hi all,

Just purchased a hood for my freelander, It needs a bit of love and affection.

Anyone have any tips to bring out the best of these hoods

Thanks

I use AutoGlym Hood Cleaner to get it clean off followed by Hood Protector to keep it proofed - not sure hopw much it is tho' - I blagged mine off a mate who blagged a load of stuff of the AutoGlym rep

I read on a forum somewhere that autoglym ruined a hood of an MG. It is about £20 for the hood cleaning kit are you saying it will restore the blackness to make it look good again.

Thanks for the reply by the way

I use auoglym bumper restorer on all bumpers and trim (we've got hardback) and it has amazing effect on our 6 year old flndr. You need to reapply about every 8-10 weeks.

I have an MG and in the manuel it says you should hoover the hood from time to time (the outside). Treat it with a chemical that restores its water repelent characteristics too. Don't over do it though ;)

I normally swear by Autoglym but found the bumper stuff a bit of a let down on my 8 yr old Tiny. I got some cheap and nasty spray on stuff from B&M bargains and it keeps its sheen for months now!

The times I refresh my bumpers (also to 'hide' white polish marks) I use simple lineseedoil, applied with a piece of cloth it does wonders.

Hi,

If its a fabric hood like i think the Auto Glym stuff is good, ive done it a few times on my Lotus Elan and its simple.

First use the shampoo and give it a good clean, then wash it off and remove all excess water.

Allow to dry for maybe 24 hours and out of direct sunlight (Garage much better) mask off the edges of the hood.

Test the spray on a corner a leave for 10 minutes but its pretty safe stuff, then give the whole hood a coats not too close as to leave wet marks. Leave to dry and do another coat.

Try and put about 5 thin coats on.

Take off masking and remove any excess spray (dont leave on as its harder to shift when dry).

Ive also heard the BMW hood kit is great at around £25ish but also the scotch gaurd from B&Q is good.

Note this will make it look alot better but wont make it brand new if its already faded..... you need this for that: http://www.elkparts.com/product_info.php/products_id/2575?osCsid=4e792dc8b4491b8b4e13546df361a444

Hope this helps

anybody got any bright ideas on the best way to clean the plastic windows? mine are already starting to look second hand after a couple of months in the sun

Hi,

The best thing ive ever used for screens is a company called http://www.hindsightuk.com/

Its hard work best really does work.

You have to apply the cutting compound and polish out any swirls or marks, then use the second stage polish to finish off the job.

It will take about an hour and it would be a good idea to do it after cleaning your hood.

I would suggest max once a year to bring the screen up like new.

Before you buy this you could get some household wood polish as that makes the screen look a lot clearer without any effort.

Cheers
