Hi guys,

I have always wanted a landy and was thinking i need a project ...

The question is, is it possible for a total novice like me to end up with a decent 90 soft top for under £2k??

There's all the things i dont know and all the things i dont know i dont know... so does anyone have any advice?

cheers

I sold a 2.5 N/A ex-RAF soft top 90 for £1500 back along, so yer it is possible.

Anythings possible if you shop around, for instance i bought my 90 3 years ago in reasonable nick with the latter 200tdi engine for £750 although the millage is around 192,000 its still a pretty good price considering the engine costs around £300-£500 ish if fitted yourself.

2.5 N/A refferrs to the 2.5 litre normally aspirated engine fitted to early 90's/110's, this was then followed by the tdi engine, 200 tdi (commonly fitted to replace earlier engined 90's/110's) likewise with the 300tdi engine. After that came the td5 which i doubt you could get for your budget and most recently the transit engined defenders which would be a definete no no at that price.

Theres been alot of info posted about the kind of things to look for when buying a defender so im sure if you do a search you'll find pleanty

maybe buy a normal 90. there like meccano so you cold make into a soft top. i paid £900 for my 90 with a 200tdi. not a sort top though

thanks for the advice guys.

so i'm om the look out for a normal 90 200tdi at around £900. Any guidance on the sort of mileage and age i should target?

There's a couple of conversions projects i've found online ...i'm assuming the big cost items will be 1) roll bar / cage and 2) canvas hood...

You'lll have to look hard for that money. And id be surpised if thats ya biggest costs.

just to make it clear mine is an old 1986 one and has many dents on it, roof and all. the car is 190,000 miles and the engine is 120,000 miles. i have had to replace fuel tank, uj's, rebuild front hubs and replace cam belt. it was mot'ed and taxed but is not a mint motor for £900. i thought i got a bargain! its not a defender either, it is just a plain old 90. i think £1500 would get you going with maybe a late 80's one. i think converting to a soft top would take lots of ebay hunting and probably £300 in cost to do.

maybe an option?

If you are looking for a soft top 90, I might be able to help.

Our gliding club has a soft top 90 with a 2.5 normally aspirated diesel engine, which we would consider selling for the right offer. It is in good all round condition, except for the main gearbox, which is jammed. It was in regular use until about three weeks ago.

It was bought directly from the RAF, and has never been civvy registered. I understand that we did get transfer paperwork with it, but its current whereabouts is unknown. Usage has been light airfield use, apart from a recent attempt to tow a heavy (3.7 ton) caravan which broke the gearbox. A fitter in the airfield's vehicle workshop checked the vehicle over and said the diffs etc. are all good. I have seen gearboxes go for next to nothing on eB*y, but they are usually at the wrong end of the country.

The speedo drive was broken when a new clutch was put in about a year ago; but other than that it was all working.

There is a picture of it here, if you click on 'facilities':
