Like rest of the country i woke up to deep snow and couldnt wait to get the freelander out! last time it snowed i had a disco so really wanted to see how the freelander managed.
It was superb and took me everywhere and was great in the snow,i even had some drifting in an empty car park! When i went out there was a large crowd watching to see if i would get stuck like others trying but i just trundled past and heard a nipper say "he will make it hes got a landrover" which put a smirk on me face but my best moment was we called into tescos and the bottom car park was empty apart from a 5 series bmw with some toffs in it doing about a 50mph wheel spin!! and they were well stuck and i couldnt resist driving in and drifting a couple of doughnuts and driving off making some peeps laugh!hehehe
So who else has been playing in the snow???
 
Yep, couldn't resist having a blast in works car park in 1.5ft of the stuff, whilst mr "needs recovery" discovery, gawped on wishfully thinking! ;)

I think I let the side down a bit as I got stuck in my 2003 Freelander. The snow was deep enough so that I had problems opening my door to get out so not a complete disgrace but I think if I had kept more momentum I would have got farther. It took me about half an hour to dig out enough to move backwards 10 yards and then get stuck again. Luckily a guy in lifted defender pulled me out. I had the 3 Amigos plus handbrake light on all the way home but that seems to have cured itself now ?
Overall the freelander in the Snow is much better than the Subaru I was driving last year, but not as much fun as my Jimny that I took out this afternoon, which apart from 2 slow uncontrolled but i like to think graceful 360 s down a steep sheet ice hill was brilliant.
 
We got a bit of snow down here, I went out to make sure people were not in trouble in the surrounding villages. Gave a few people an escort which they appreciated. I soon realised the limitations though, and later avoided going beyond them.

The Freelander was superb climbing hills. However, steep descents were a problem. In my case, I found that I shouldn't have too much faith in HDC as some conditions will obviously screw me over, regardless. (i.e. VERY steep hill + snow). Obviously the braking action of HDC can still lead to a slide/skid if the tyres are unable to find any traction what so ever. However, I often found it more effective to just put it in first and manually slow the car down via engine braking.

On one occasion I had to literally bounce off the hedges. Though, some other 4x4 driver had to do the same thing. On another occasion, I did a 180 degree slide while on a descent, and decided to drive back up the hill instead. The reason I did this was because I was gaining too much speed on the hill and every attempt to slow the car down had failed. So I pointed it at a hedge, following that, the rear span round. Shortly after, a disco passed me in the opposite direction. (He was about to go down the same hill) I was curious to know what happened to him, as I knew it was very slippery. However, I didn't wanna slide down the hill on my ass, so I just drove on by.

I should point out that I only have summer tyres on my FL. Not because I want them, but because I can't get A/Ts for 17" FL wheels. :( If I had A/Ts, do ya reckon it would still be easy to slide about in relatively light snow conditions? (8cm) I do know the importance of having appropriate tyres, but in those conditions, I'm curious to know how much more effective A/Ts would have been.

Didnt have time to play as had to get back to Wilts for nightshift tonight ;)

Don't worry about it, it's to be expected with your choice of transport:rolleyes:, just flag down a Beamer 4x4 to tow you out................












................................Oh damn ...........still waiting for a proper 4x4:D
