Been going through front diffs like crazy so build up a pegged 4 pin diff.

Went out this afternoon for a play and blew it in under 5 mins!

Crown wheel and pinion destroyed and top pinion bearing destroyed.

What else can I do?
 
Did you do the diff pegging yourself or buy a pre done diff casing?
Was the diff and pegging set up correctly.
Or has the pegging actually worked, Kept them in constant mesh and ripped the teeth off. Hard to say really. (If that was a standard crown wheel and pinion I guess that wouldn't be to hard to do)
 
Did it myself, yes worked perfectly but I think the top bearing must have smashed first allowing the pinion to move out of mesh rather than the crown wheel moving.
 
Wow what a useful comment! If you've never broken anything then your kind of "landrovering" is sure to be somewhat tamer than what I get up to.
 
Yep set her up perfect with dial guage. Was a real nice diff, quite pleased with it when I finished it, will rebuild it tomorrow and keep it gentle like I always used to with normal diffs.

I was giving it some beans when it went
 
looking at the picture of your truck its not surprising :eek:something will have to give ,half shafts may be cheaper:)
 
Lets get something straight....I know nothing....

but, would a few rubber doughnuts in the drive train such as there is on the Discovery series one be helpful to reduce the shock loading you seem to be suffering from....chances are you'll get through a few but they are a cheaper option than a diff rebuild and in theory a quick field change!
 
Trewey was right, to drive that without smashing the drive train you're going to have to learn how to drive softly no matter what else you do to beef things up
 
To be honest I wasn't surprised it broke considering how easy they've broken before.

Wheres the truck? Looks like a Land rover to me! :rolleyes:

LR drive train just isn't designed to cope with tractor wheels, you will have to learn to be very light footed if you don't want to break that all the time. Especially on hard surfaces, minimal throttle at all times.

Doubt it in my case, thirty years farm and forestry work, much of it in very severe conditions. And I have never broken a diff or a half shaft either.

Strange to think that breaking your vehicle regularly is some kind of measure of being a good driver, I would think quite the opposite!

Is a right of passage I have blown my diff. I am 1 tough MOFO. Those that have not are wussy's, and do not deserve to drive a 4x4

Up to them if that is what they want to do! :)

Personally I prefer not to pay the large bills, and to have my vehicle available for use and earning when I want it :cool:
