...bloomin' carry on with my low mileage engine and blown gaskets, I got a replacement thanks to Wazz and BFG.

It's been a slow process, but coming along nicely.

Before we removed the lump, we did a compression test. All cylinders gave this result or within a few psi. All done dry.

Had to upgrade my "not" engine crane (an old patient lift) with a longer boom and better wheels.

I made a rolling bench to fit the "pallet" BFG made to mount the engine upon.

I also spent a few pennies on new bits and bobs, but the price for new idler pulley's was just ridiculous o_O

So I went to the local bearing shop, Scot Bearings and spent under £30 on 2 bearings, WD40 and a tin of red rubber grease.

Wazz told me the rear oil seal had been leaking....

I think I may have found the cause....:confused:

This bolt (100% certain it was a torque converter flex plate fastening bolt) had been dropped by someone and instead of retrieving it, simply left it in place and screwed in another :eek: So this bundle of joy had walloped around for a while until it settled somewhere.

You can see it took out a few chunks of the engine though :rolleyes:

Shiny new front and rear crank seals. Here's the rear one... A thought has occurred that maybe the seal wasn't leaking, perhaps it was a crack in the sump wall o_O Although, I'm fairly sure there wasn't any obvious staining. I think the seal got damaged .

And the new LPG pipework & clips in place to go on once the lump is dropped in. Have to do the wiring plugging in (both gas and petrol injectors) before I can drop the manifold on.

If you are worried about sump put your original one on while it’s there

The thought had occurred. But there isn't (wasn't) enough oil to suggest it was actually damaged. I'll soon know if it starts leaking again, but I'm pretty sure it wont.
 
Did you use all your scrap off cuts to make your little bench trolley thingy:D

Been in a lot of pain last few days, even my fingers and thumb on 1 hand o_O It's part of being diabetic :rolleyes: Something to do with build up of collagen...

So I got my arse in gear, grinned and bore it and last night, slowly, methodically......shat myself in case the crane shat itself :confused:

However, extensions worked beautifully and I tested it by leaving it hanging for the best part on an hour. Didn't drop a millimetre :cool:

Also, with the bigger front wheels, the crane was so easy to move, my lad did it, albeit unintentionally :D That was my biggest worry, especially on that chuckie stone road surface o_O

So I bit the nutri bullet and cracked on...

I was too sore/tired to crawl under and jiggle the gearbox, so I let it sit on top of one mount and did the nuts up on the other and was home by dark o'clock.

Took a lie in today, but am of out as a mate has offered to help with the hard stuff (the heavy bits).

I am "still" astounded at how good the crane worked :eek: "Was" a patient lift, is now an patient lifter :D I undid 2 bonnet bolts and loosened the other two then held it higher with ratchet straps. Was just enough to clear the engine & crane, but the balancer was an absolute wish come true. Forward tilt to clear the slam panel, reverse tilt to start dropping it down, the straight to lower into place.... It took the best part of 40 minutes methodical checking & lowering , ensuring wires & pipes were clear of those fishing hooks they call exhaust manifolds o_O

I was well impressed with the whole kit although the only thing I need is a swivel for the crane because I had the engine in the garage front facing so had to unhook, reposition the crane and re-hook. Only a small pain in the butt, but a pain nonetheless.

So had brunch and plan to carry on with hooking up the gearbox....

Doesn't that involve undoing the stays and hooking the spring clips onto those little button things? Thought about it, but was worried I would mess it up. I know how to use a ratchet strap, but never used the service mode...

You simply release the gas struts at one end (bottom is easier), and then lift the bonnet vertical & clip into place. Ideally you want a helper because it's heavy without the struts attached.

I bought a swivel for my crane, plus some D-shackles. Makes fitting easier.

Figured out what was wrong with my bonnet stays.... the springy thingies were in the wrong place (different bonnet).

I moved them, undone the struts and she was wide open :cool:

Made a difference while searching for plugs & wires down the back of the engine :)

So got her lined up, wiggled the box using a stout stick and it went "plink" so I grabbed a vice grips, locked the mating faces and then used my lever to lift the mount, used the stout wood to move the engine backwards and "plink" onto the mount studs....happy days :cool:

Rest of the afternoon was spent supervising mates gearbox removal then back to continue the engine saga.

Managed to get the oil cooler pipes in place, 6 petrol injectors plugged in (missing 2 plugs o_O) all LPG injectors plugged in, cam sensor, oil pressure sender, A/C compressor clutch plugged in and the bottom radiator pipe fastened to the engine.... I'm sure there must have been other things, but I'm so worn out I forget :confused:

I know the bloody lower oil cooler feed pipe was a massive short for Richard :mad: But other than being leaked on, all went surprisingly well :)

I'm hoping to finish plugging and plumbing tomorrow then screw in the 4 TC flex plate. I used the one off my original engine as it was low miles and looked immaculate. Although, to be fair, Wazz'z flex plate also looked to be in good order. However, I deemed mine to be slightly cleaner and the fact it hasn't been to Europe and back several times, likely less stressed :D

So, gonna have another decent lie in tomorrow. Although I feel far far better than I have the last 3 or 4 nights :cool: So I "might" manage to finish the build tomorrow. However, no immediate hurry so happy to take my time.

I'll load some more progress pics tomorrow.

We, you know when you take the old engine out in parts, then drop the new engine in almost complete (but had to leave the inlet manifold off because you have awkward wiring for the LPG....) and find you have to undo things to allow for things and stuff o_O

That made up most of my day :D

I'd say I'm 90% there.

Oil's in.

Belts on.

Just a few bits to do, but most of the wiring is connected.

I put the propeller on :p then had to take it off to put the shroud on :rolleyes:

I put the AC compressor & PAS pump on, then had to undo the belt, PAS pump, AC compressor, mounting bracket just to route a wire to the knock sensor :oops:

But such is life ;)

Tomorrow, I'll connect the down-pipes and coolant pipes and whatnot. Then I'll spin the engine over to build oil pressure and check for leaks because I have my suspicions about a cooler pipe at the front of the engine...

Pretty sure I'll have her running tomorrow or Sunday :cool:

Such fun :p

Excellent work it’s always the way when you don’t do such projects all the time but that’s just the process to a real sense of achievement. Looking forward to the next instalment.

It's funny, my gran's neighbour had a son who passed when I was a kid, but she kept his motor scooter outside the house (she lived upstairs and there was a bit of path between the doorways where his bike sat for many many years and I used to be allowed to play on it, imagining I was scooting around :cool:). Anyway, his nick name was Tricky :)

Well, today started and finished late. I was flagging just as darkness approached, but a mouthful of painkillers and an hour later I was plodding along. But my knee :(:(

Anyhoo, I concentrated on tidy. I managed it, mostly. But before that, here's a bit of an over-use of insta gasket :p

I remember how nasty the old LPG install was, so I bought a bunch of new bits and tidied it all up.Pity I disturbed the inlet pipe seal and gas comes pissing out soon as I switch :eek: Still, it's likely to be an old hard "O" ring and I have a whole box of them in the garage so tomorrow....

Anyway, I think the engine bay looks sweet :)

I had a video of the engine running, but it's taking forever to upload :rolleyes:......Oh, wait! :oops: Aaaaaaaannnnnnd I have no idea how to add a video from imgur o_O (Anyone???)

I pulled the fuel pump relay & fuse while the engine was out so I could turn on the ignition without the tank emptying all over the deck :D So I let the engine spin over a few revolutions to pump the oil around the circuit and through the cooler.

Once I popped the fuse & relay back in she fired right up and ran like a champ :cool:

Got a few bits & bobs to do tomorrow (or maybe Monday :rolleyes: ), but happy to report the engine is in and running.

Time for a glass of spirit :cool:
