Anticipation is everything....
For example, if you can adjust your speed to ensure you are not at the junction / bend / pinch point as the guy coming the other way, then even if he stuffs it up and slides across the road, he won't hit you because you are not there.
It's as much about planning around the other idiots, as it is about driving within the capability of yourself and your vehicle.
I can still remember driving along the road, and into a car park with not a slip, or a slide, or even the slightest feeling of loss of control, only to fall flat on my back when attempting to walk back across the car park!
