Hi all,

I have a Defender 110 2.2 TD XS (2012) and I'm looking to install an air intake kit/snorkel. Can anyone advise as to which one is most suitable/the best for my Defender?
 
One of the proper metal versions with a mushroom top, rather than the poncy moulded plastic ones.

What are you using it for? That would dictate which would be the better setup.
 
I had one of those. It rusted out in no time. I’m going plastic the next time.

Mine is galvanized so not a problem. I got all of my steel "accessories" galvanized a while back when I had some sand ladders and some other bits I was putting in anyway, was very cheap as a cash job on the side. Means everything that is not ali on mine is now galvanized.

What are you using it for? That would dictate which would be the better setup.

This will also dictate what else you need to do. If it just for aesthetics driving around the city then nothing, if it is for going through dessert/dust then just the snorkel, if it is for driving up river with the water level slightly below the roof line then you will need extended breathers, and a raised ecu as well.

I hate powder coating, I have never had good experience with it (although all of my experience is with the standard powder coating that comes with new parts (which I have then bought second hand when they are not new), it may be better if you take it somewhere to get a better quality of coating). I stripped off everything that was steel, snorkel, bumper, bull bars, light guards, rear ladder, swingaway, tree sliders, mounting brackets, snow cowl, light bar, etc. everything I could easily remove got removed. Put it all on a low heat wood fire to burn off the powder coating (you need to be carful with this it the fire is too hot it will distort things), some of the smaller thinner pieces I did with the blow torch. I then wire wheeled to clean up and the larger parts I sand blasted. I am lucky in that there is a huge galvanisers in Birmingham which is nice a local to me. Then once returned it was all t-washed and painted and nearly 10 years later other than touching up the paint all still looks great an no rust. If yours is a keeper i would definitely recommended it as worth the time, effort, and minimal expense if you do all the prep work yourself.
