I am a novice to LRs and 4 x 4s, so do not all shot me at once. I have a 110 SW TD5, as a newby I am thinking of installing a Snorkel, to help improve the air intake for the engine also will be a precaution in case the vehicle ever gets into deep water.

So with that as a background any advice you have will be welcomed, am I wise to go down the route, what Snorkel is the best one, all advice please.

Tis a personal thing I think unless of coarse you plan to do some wading, I have the mantec snorkel on my motor for absolutely no other reason than I liked the look of that one the most;););)

I have the safari snorkel, and in my opinion it's the best. It's fairly similar to a mantec but the head rotates which is useful. Paddocks were the cheapest when I got it.

I don't think it will improve your air intake at all. It's really just for wading.

I also chose the safari one, purely because it has a spigot that goes inside the engine bay, which the pipe is sealed to. Other makes rely on making an airtight seal on both sides of the wing. I figured the spigot thing is less likely to have an air leak. Mines a 300tdi though. So not sure of the td5 version is different.

If you are planning on wading, you should consider a wading breather kit also. Got mine from ebay for about 25 quid

i went for the mantec snorkel, its easier to fit than the safari snorkel and i think it looks better, google flatdog 4x4 they were the cheapest when i bought mine a few months back.

Later TD5 kits from Safari use the wing to seal too.

This isn't a problem providing you use a suitable sealant and cake it on to assure a waterproof seal.

I find the later kit is also a bit more of a faff to fit, due to this.

The safari snorkels require holes to be drilled in the wing. If you wish to remove the snorkel you can't without sorting the holes. The mantec type often need a couple of holes drilled in the wing but if you want to put it back to standard it will be out of sight.
