Just bought the missus a 03plate TD4 with 90k on clock and no mention of vcu change in history,

I tried the reverse round a corner test and it felt very slightly stiff. although when on ground I could turn it with a garden fork prong and a long bar pushed through gaps in prop,

But we're going to keep it for a while so I thought for the sake of £300 now for a recon is better than £1000's if it breaks later, and peace of mind for the missus,

Found the really good guide on here how to remove vcu,
but when I tried to remove front prop from vcu with hammer and cold chilsel I snapped the cast iron bit on end of prop where it meets vcu (is this called a yoke?),

Question is: can I buy this end bit on it's own any where?, if so is it Land rover only part and any idea how much,

2nd question is: rear props seem a lot cheaper than front ones, Can I fit that bit from a rear prop onto a front prop as they both join vcu,

3rd question: Best site to buy recon vcu as I saw some users have been ripped off by some bloke selling recon vcu's,

4th Question, any other ideas how to split prop from vcu as still got the rear one to do, got it soaking in wd40 at mo,

Any help and advice would be greatly recieved, Thanks, Bill

x2 for Bell Engineering. Very reputable place for good money. Get the bearings at the same time

Pretty sure props are different in the fittings+length. I am sure they are sold as a front and rear for a reason.

Any piccies?

I believe the Yoke is the same for the front and rear although the complete shaft is different!! Get a shaft off Ebay and use the Yoke with a new UJ!! The Yoke should never be struck with cold iron as it's a forging so is likely to shatter ;) always use a soft faced hammer with a brass drift!! I generally use the inner securing bolt as a lever point which seems to work 99% of the time especially with the application of a little heat!!
As already said Bell do everything you need ;)

Pretty sure that the front and rear splined yokes are the same, reason the front prop is more expensive is because it has the CV joint. Have a word with Bells they might even have a spare yoke, I used the chisel as a wedge idea to remove mine.

Did you undo the bolt holding the prop on the cvu, before trying to force the prop oft the vcu splines?

If you're not sure how to remove the yoke have a look in the Haynes manual as this shows the wedge method, not trying to teach Granny to suck eggs but some folks may not know.

Hi all, Thanks for all the replies, I think I got spare yoke sorted thanks to booboodag, cheers.
Yes I did loosen the bolt and removed the U shaped washer,
the mistake I think I made was not putting cold chisel straight enough as it veered off to an angle,
As for getting the rear prop off it just fell off as I was trying to get the remains of the yoke off the front, probably because I had it soaking in wd40 all night long.

Looking at both yokes I reckon that they are both the same and both fit either side of vcu,

Phone call to bell engineering tomorrow I think as been well recommended on here, any one got there number? if not I'll google it

update:
Got spare yoke from booboodag, cheers
bought uj from ebay, about £7 with postage, and reasonably easy to fit,
Got recon VCU from Bell engineering, cheapest I could find at £215 inc postage
fiited it all together today with only a few small mistakes but all working now.

Advice to anyone doing same:
check out Hippo's how to guide on changing vcu bearings,
invaluble information that I checked back to several times whilst doing it.
