Morning all. Just when i thought me luck couldnt get any better got in Betsy this morning drove 100 yards down the road hears a clunk then realise iv now got rear wheel steering! Looked underneath her me trailing arm on drivers side has sheared off not the axle end the other-any ideas on wheres cheapest for a replacement pair? Craddocks is coming up about £180 which wouldnt be too bad if i hadnt just had to dig out all me blocked drains and put in new last week..that pipework aint cheap.:(Her crossmember might get done by time im 40...
 
Are there any Landy recycling people in your area?

Might be the best place to start looking.

That was the principle reason the fella in Lincolnshire went to jail - his trailing arm snapped albeit after he had welded it back together.

Scary stuff and I would guess difficult to assess the condition. As these cars get older I wonder how many more have this hidden and lethal fault?

His trailing arm snapped causing him to lose complete control of the car and end up in the dyke along with his children.

He had seconds before swerved to avoid another motorist who he claimed (and I beleive) was on his side of the road. This swerve dropped the nearside road wheels into a gully that would otherwise have been unimportant except that in doing so it broke the recent welded up trailing arm

Rear wheel steer of epic proportions.

The micro investigation of the recovered vehicle highlighted some other mechanical defficiencies including mis matched calipers but they were essentially the Crowns supporting evidence to the avoidability of the crash.

No charges were ever brought against the other driver and frankly much of the claims against the defendant were typical of many 'shoe string' Defender owners.

I only skimmed the story, you may well be right if you have investigated the fuller story.
 
FWIW I personally felt Nigel Gresham was very badly treated by the judicial process.

The accident was totally unforeseen and the majority of the Crowns case was to paint a picture of the man and his car which was almost entirely irrelavant to the accident.

The press and his wife had a field day.

While the asian doctor whose Transit van pulled into his path was spared any proceedings.

Shameful and if you or any of Nigels friends are reading this you have my sympathy and I hope you are finding some peace.

Why, ligaly, can you not weld a trailing arm.. How would one kno what they can and cannot weld? I'm not taking sides or anything, just want to make sure I don't do anything wrong!
 
Cheers for all that info gents i wont be welding anything but may have to put 2nd hand trailing arms on as new ones are too pricey at the mo.
 
It's like steering components, they can't be welded, I would imagine anything like a trailing arm, radius arm, A-frame should not be welded, wishbone systems in other vehicles etc should not be welded. Not to mention the fact that a lot of these things are castings making welding them difficult and usually not as strong as a mild steel weld.

Can you post a picture or two, I am intrigued to see the damage.

You'd like to think a component like that was almost unbreakable!

A bit like a track rod end (Britpart mind you so not as surprised) that I saw where the ball had come clean out of the housing leaving the vehicle totally unsteerable! Catastpophic failure ought to be near impossible.
 
Ta for the offer Crooked but all sorted now are u nearby to Wigan? Disco didnt take any pics but was it was making a bloody awful noise put the wind right up me! Glad i had none of the kids in with me when it went.:eek:

How does chop shop get away with it? they cut n shut anything :doh:
