Hello and help!

My RRC V8 3.9 1991 has just failed the MOT on a leaking exhaust manifold. To be fair, I did know it was leaking before it was tested and knew it needed doing.

It went in to a local garage a few weeks ago and I asked them to sort it. They told me that one head bolt was snapped (that's why it was leaking) and they admitted to snapping a second when taking it off. They replaced the gaskets but said, although it was improved it wouldn't last long. About a week and the leak was back.

The snapped bolts are the two bottom ones on the offside, at the rear.

The garage said the head(s) need to come off (total cost £500, incl. skim in both sides. £350 for just the one side). A friend said rubbish a decent exhaust centre should be able to get the bolts out. I contacted the place who fitted the s/s system we have on the car and they said "anywhere between a couple of days to over a grand if the heads come off"

Can anyone suggest what to do? I live in Fife so does anyone know anywhere in Fife, Perthshire or Tayside who might be able to do this?

It has to be done within 14 days to get back for a retest.

Help!

Thanks!

IMO as they snapped it they should rectify one of the bolts really

One was snapped already and to be fair they did warn me others might snap before they attempted the job. Plus, they didn't have to admit they snapped the second one, they could have just said it already had two snapped.

No, I'm happy with the garage, it's what I do now which is the question.

Thanks for the reply.

extract the bolts or buy recon heads for about £250 on ebay

you could drill and tap I suppose or with some careful welding build up a stalk on the bolt and then extract it but that might be why they were on about skimming incase it warped

They are not easy to get out sometimes, if your good with a welder, drill a stepped hole int he old bolt and fill it with weld and add a nut on the end, the head will free it, what I'de like to know is why they say it needs a skim?

This is above my skill level so I have found a local(ish) 4x4 garage who will see if they can do it without removing the head on Tuesday. Fingers crossed!

FWIW get yourself a stud kit and replace the bolts. Rimmers do a reasonable stud kit but I'm afraid it won't help get the broken bolts out. Normally it means the head has to come off, then carefully drill out.
