Evening all.
Just taking apart the heater blower (guessing the motor is dead ā˜¹ļø) ready for a clean up and found this inside

Any idea what it is and what it does?

Hopefully reassembly commencing today.
Just a thought, how does one test the resistor without a volt meter?
J rig a bulb and see if one wire makes it shine brighter than the other?

I'm trying to test the resistor before I reassemble the casing.
I've still got to buy a new motor as the old one is kaput šŸ˜•
Well, I've tried it on a 12v supply and it doesn't move!

It's a 10 OHm, wire wound, ceramic resistor.
It halves the power getting to the blower motor so it runs slower.
It's in the airflow so it keeps cool.

I fitted two 10 OHm, 100W metal cased wirewound resistors in parrallel to mine and slow speed is now slightly faster than original and still slower than fast.

I seem to remember taking my fan motor apart to give it a clean and fettle, you could probably revive it and it will certainly be better than a new one.
 
If the bearing/bush's have gone dry they tend to stick or only run at full power, much the same as wiper motors which only go at one speed no matter where the switch is.
 
So, I've taken the motor apart.
I don't suppose anyone knows where the two big springs go?šŸ™„

I can see that I need to replace a brush spring šŸ‘
 
I've got a new "Smiths" heater motor here that I think I bought from Paddocks at some point.
Interestingly it seems to be made in China !
You're probably better off reviving your old motor if you can, it's probably better quality

I've managed to get a new old stock from P A Blanchard.
So hopefully it's of good quality šŸ˜ƒ
