Hi. I hope someone has some advise for an issue I have with an 04 plate TD4. The vehicle is kicking out a lot of black smoke under hard acceleration. It has been code read which came up with P0224 which showed as accelerator position switch. This has beeen changed but the problem still exists and the code will not clear. The MAF has been checked and appears to be working properly. The EGR valve has already been removed and cleaned but the problem remains.
Can anyone help please?
Many thanks

Couple of hand grenades should do the trick best placed above the fuel tank. :D

How many miles bud? Have you changed the diesel filter and checked the turbo?

Also check when the crankcase breather valve/filter assembly was last changed as apparently they can cause smoking when really bad (should be changed every 12,000 miles). Also try a good quality injector cleaner like Lucas or Redex etc. None of these explain your fault code but are worth checking anyway

I agree with chromy, change crankcase breather, and like chipv8 says change your fuel filter.
let us know how you get on.

Hey Chromiumuk i have looked in the manual (on disk) cant find anything
about the crankcase breather filter replacement?

Would like to do this on my TD4, can you tell us its location & the
procedure of how to do it!

First job is to remove the large dust cover over the top of the engine if it's still there, don't worry if it's missing as mine was. Next you'll need a set of long shank Allen keys to remove the air filter cover located on top of the engine at the bulkhead. Remove the oil cap, three visible allen screws (5mm I think) on top of the cover & the two allen screws hidden down the back one of which you'll have to feel for. Use this opportunity to replace the air filter. Next I think there was another small cover with easily visible allen screws over the injector wiring but it's been a while since doing mine so I'm not sure. You'll now have to remove the injector harness screws & gently move the harness out of the way. For this you'll need a female Torx set, though I carefully used a small socket 5mm or 5.5mm that came with a screwdriver set that snugly fitted over the screw & very gently unbolted it. I also had to disconnect a couple of injector return pipes - dead easy, remove the slide fit silver clip & gently pull the pipe off the injector. Your now ready to undo the allen cap bolts that hold the breather valve/filter assembly & fit your new unit. It's not a particularly difficult job, the worst bit is lining up the air filter cover properly when putting it all back together. Allow a couple of hours & take your time. I got my replacement Valve/Filter from Duckworth through ebay for £26 inc. postage.

Roverron has a useful page on servicing which also shows the position of the air filter screws on the following link. Don't worry if it looks a little different to yours, the photos are from a Rover 75 which has different intake pipework but is basically the same.

Good luck with this & let us know how you get on.

yur some smart dude willow, do you do all yur own work on yur wagon?

Reading this forum and most of all listen very carefully when the ming and other oldtimers say/explain something will teach you a lot about your 'wagon'......:D

Oh, I forgot to say that once you've taken off your air filter cover, put your oil cap back on to stop any dirt getting into your engine whilst your working, then remove it again before refitting the cover.
