Hi Guys I hope someone here can help. 2004 Freelander TD4, 200K on the clock. I passed the Irish equivalent of the MOT and then a week later began to smoke like hell.
Did all the usual checks listened for the hiss from the hoses. Didn't fine one so replaced the lot.
Changed every single sensor and filter that I could. New filters all round, new fuel pump and filter (under the arch) reconditioned injectors. Cleaned out the plastic intake manifold, replaced the gaskets.New MAF sensor.New air temp sensor, fuel pressure sensor and replaced the wiring for same.
It runs OK thought somewhat lumpy. I've pulled the connectors off in order one at a time on the injectors to see which if any of them was not pulling its weight. But got nowhere. I like this jeep but at this stage if it doesn't start pulling it's weight it's off to the scrappy.
Had a guy come out and run a diagnostics but got nothing, just a note on fuel but nothing explicit.
Smoke is blue white which points to air fuel, when you put the foot down it goes black. No whine of the turbo and there's still a good deal of pull when you put it on load. So any thoughts would be much appreciated. I've gone through the links here. I must have the entire TD4 trouble links library bookmarked.
Any help appreciated. You guys have saved me a fortune over the years on fixes that would have cost me an arm and a leg. Keep up the good work no matter what the outcome on my little bundle of joy.

You're welcome to take a Jeep to the scrappy, but a Land Rover needs fixing!:D

As for the smoke. Have you looked at the live data for the boost pressure?
Have you replaced all the VAC pipes? The VAC pipes are known to crack under the cloth covering, preventing the turbo from developing full boost, which results in an over fueled mixture, and black smoke.
 
Also have to get rid of the death rattle from the crank pulley, has become very noisy of late. Another one of those, wait for a dry day jobs.
 
Does it black smoke before the turbo kicks in?
Can you confirm the turbo actuator moves fully.
Is it worth doing leak back test on injectors?
I'd attempt to find issue rather than changing sensors as it's possible to cause more problems, been there before....many time.

Sensors were changed as a last resort. Did all the usual fuel filters etc before moving on to the next related probable cause. Was told by my local LR garage that it had to be sensors as I'd changed all the obvious and with the white smoke it was an air problem. Hence the removal and replacement of the hoses, some really did needed doing. Left hand side intake hose that gets the rubbing off the securing bolt on the intake side. Am waiting for the rain to abate and I have some free time after work to fiddle with it again.
Thanks for all the info, will get back when I get out to do them and see if it will pull itself fro the scrappy, (yet again). Diesel prices here aren't helping my underlying urge to move on. over two Euros a litre!!
