Hi all
Seems an odd one this but here goes
Td4 smoking bad after acceleration the BMW engine
Goes on for about 5 minutes
Turbo change and all working as I assumed it was that
It ain't
Crank breather valve changed
HOSES CHANGED
EGR VALVE CHANGED
Injectors checked and swapped but still the same
Starts perfectly and will idle all.day long not getting hot but press the pedal and boom
More smoke than the old bill would let me drive for sure
Its white smoke i think so am thinking overfueling or something

Any thoughts?
Cheers

Thanks
How do I do that ?
The smoke is there after turbo has run and stopped as well
It goes on for about 5 minutes at idle when I stop
Clearance than no smoke aging until I throttle her up

Easy. Remove the elbow boost pipe( where the EGR valve is), then get some ordinary white kitchen towel, and rev the engine (with a helper) while holding the towel in the air stream. If the air is carrying excess oil, then oil spots will appear on the paper towel.

What do you mean? Does the engine not stop when you've switched it off?

Hi Barnview, I've got pretty much the same symptoms as you on my 2003 TD4 at the moment. It idles fine, give it some throttle, then wafts of white smoke appear. Then leave it idling again, and the smoke gradually disappears over several minutes, and will go clear, but give it some throttle again, and the smoke is back.

I haven't changed the turbo in mine, for after doing the test Nodge suggests, with taking off the elbow hose to the EGR and putting some white paper towel across it, it was clean as a whistle, after some quite heavy throttle.

I've checked/changed all the things you have done, apart from the injectors, which is next on my list now. When you say you have swapped the injectors, do you mean you've put new/recon ones in, or secondhand ones? BTW, have you left the injectors to adjust themselves? My understanding is that when new injectors are put in, it can take a short while for them to be working with optimum timing etc. again. In which time it can still smoke.

I'll be changing my injectors in the coming weeks, so will let you know if that solves it. The only other things I've done in addition to you is changed the fuel (mine had been sitting for a year) and replaced the fuel filter. I did also put a new MAF sensor in mine too, for when I ran the Hawkeye on it, the value decreased from ~500mg/strk at ticker to ~300mg/strk when the throttle was applied, instead of raising to the expected 700mg/stk. Maybe it's worth seeing how your MAF is performing? or to disconnect it so that it runs at the default values and see if that makes any difference?

I'm assuming the ~5 minute continuation of some smoke after taking the foot off the throttle and letting it idle, is the unburnt fuel sitting in the exhaust and being burnt off with heat.

It's frustrating throwing money at the engine again and again, trying to resolve these problems, but at least at the end of it, once it's solved, these other bits that have been replaced in vain, should be something less to go wrong for sometime yet.

Hope you get it sorted.
