Hi can anyone please help with some advice, when I start my 1993 200tdi 90 it smokes quite a lot for a few mins then stops, only does it when it has been sat for some time ie overnight. The smoke is white/blueish and like I say only last till I reach the end of the street but there is quite a lot of it and the neighbours have started giving me funny looks lol.

vehicle has done 109k does'nt seem to be any emulsion in the oil filler cap and it does'nt appear to be leaking oil any place particular except for a bit around the cyclone breather.

Not being much of a mechanic any help and advice you can give would be much apreciated.:scratching_chin:

Blue smoke only overnight would possibly indicate valve stem seals, white smoke is either unburnt fuel or coolant from hgf if your loosing water

mine was smoking a bit when left overnight, i decided to try a forte fuel additive, drives much better and no smoke. Not sure if it will fix your problem though

Have put a fuel additive in last time i filled it lets see if that helps any.

Fanatic it's not losing water and if its unburnt fuel any ideas on cause or how best to go about fixing it ???

White smoke and no loss of coolant is un burnt diesel at the miles you have compression loss is unlikely and more likely injector dribbling.

Blue smoke is normally valve stem seals if it only does it after standing

Worth trying a well known injection cleaner.

My advice is obviously not seeing it-could you video it possibly and does it run evenly from cold

Int there a sticky on exhuast smoke? Thought I'd seen one but cant find it......if there int it might be an idea.....if there is...well.....its bin a weird week:rolleyes:

If you are looking for a diesel injector cleaner/addative Asda have an offer on... half price I think. Read the instructions and dont be tempted to mix it strong

Right I have a bit more info about the smoking so i thought i would write an update and hope you guys can point me in the right direction.

Changed the glow plugs today and found that 3 out of the four were covered in oil (starting from front of engine the first 3, 4th was dry as a bone)

still smokes like a trooper but again only for a short time (2-3mins) so i assume its the oil its burning off, oviously head gasket springs to mind but it runs fine gets a good top speed and no outwardly signs of leakage. Doesnt seem to go through oil particuarly but it does have too much in it (care of previous owner) got a service kit on way so will remedy that soon, so not sure if thats the cause?

Any help you guys can give is much appreciated as the neighbours are really starting to stare now when i start it lol

1993 90 200tdi 109,000 miles

My 200tdi 1993 90 does exactly the same but hasn't given me any problems and I haven't bothered to look. Too many other jobs taking priority! I just make sure I nip out and start it up when the rest of my road are still asleep. :rolly:

hi sorry to bump into the defender forum but ive been having this problem with my disco 300tdi ive tried all these additives and new plugs still got the problem next stop valve guides/seals i think..... any of you guys think this is a step in the right direction ? cheers.

Probably wouldn't hurt tae check them;)
Another thing ye might try is blankin' off yer EGR and decattin' the exhaust.

I have been having this problem recently also. I bought an over head valve spring compressor tool, popped the collets out and replaced the valve guide seals on all eight valves. It made bugger all difference. My injectors and my injection pump are brand new and my timing is spot on, all four glow plugs are working well too. It's a mix or white/blue smoke only on startup and my idle is a bit lumpy from time to time. I am putting it down to air in my fuel system (which there is - and shouldn't be) and water in my air intake which is condensation forming in the breather pipe

since the new glow plugs went in has made some difference but not totally solved it, had a sniff of the exhaust its definatly fuel. had a nosey through old posts will try some of the things mentioned ie cleaning bresther pipes etc. hopefully wil at least get it to the point of not being so noticable

funny enough... mine does the same.

when stood for a few days or overnight, when i start it it smokes.. looks like a train!
i also have straight through exhaust, so not sure if that makes a difference...

and it stops after 5min if I let it run on the drive, or stops just down the road if I drive away....

all runs fine, have loads of power, etc... dont think im loosing any coolant or oil either..
its a white smoke with very strong smell of exhaust fumes

May be one or two dead or nearly dead glowplugs, she starts 2 or 3 cyl then the rest get going as motor warms.Go through the glow sequence 3 times without starting engine, then remove plugs, any oily ones probably not working right.

ive just test my new plug only got one working, so im hoping another new set will cure some of the smoking.

Time for another update

Had the injectors out yesterday and gave them a good scrub with a tooth brush and some fuel additive, they were pretty sooty on the tips but cleaned up well with some effort. Point being the smoking has diminished some more to the point now where its not really that bad so that will please the neighbours lol
