Hi, my 01 plate freelander has started smoking on start up revving the engine etc ( dark grey smoke ) we had the problem a year ago and my husband found a split hose to the turbo, hes checked both hoses and they are fine any ideas? if its a easy fix he will try himself if not its a trip to the garage

could check the crankcase breather pipe at the back of the engine left hand side behind the airfilter isn't blocked ?

My Mondeo was doing this, cleaned the maf sensor, (the sensor wires get coated with particles in the air (despite the air filter) and send false readings to the ecu) and the connector plug with electrical contact cleaner, and put dielectric grease in the plug contacts, smoke no-more.

I've heard the maf in the TD4s were unreliable and degrade over time.

Thats the turbo boost control solenoid vent filter/pipe not crankcase breather :p:)

oops.... I rushed in without thinking there.. but worth checking the crankcase breather as well (take off airfilter cover, and it is to the left at the back behind the injectors IIRC ...)
