The old smoking topic again. I have a 19J with 77,000km on it. It makes blue smoke on starting which I have seen mentioned on other threads.

It will also make blue smoke under the following conditions. Where I live in Knysna, South Africa, we have a steep hill about 2 km in length. I usually come down this hill in 4th gear which causes the engine to rev up somewhat, foot off the throttle completely. About half way down, it will start to make blue smoke at the exhaust. the moment you give it a bit of throttle the blue smoke disappears.

This got me thinking, could it be oil coming from the turbo axle/shaft. Apparently this "floats" in oil and as long as the turbo (compressor side) is producing positive boost, the oil returns to the case via the return line. Could it be that with no boost being produced, a small amount of oil can be sucked into the intake? Or is oil entering the exhaust on the turbine side?

I would be interested to hear the thoughts of our resident experts.

Naand Meneer, I used to have a 90 with this engine, what you describe is normal as far as my experience goes. They are smokey old lumps anyway. Blue smoke on start with mine would go away quick when the engine warmed up, going down hill same deal with a bit of smoke, wondered if a bit of oil got sucked in from the cylinders when engine braking down hill. I dont consider myself to be an expert in any way by the way.
Wees cool. :)

Di nuovo il vecchio argomento del fumo. Ho una 19J con 77.000 km. Fa fumo blu all'avviamento, cosa che ho già visto menzionata in altre discussioni.

Circa a metà discesa, inizierà a emettere fumo blu dallo scarico.

Hi, fellow smoker. I also have a 19J. My problem is similar to yours. When I start it, it smokes a lot and I smell burnt oil. Once started, after a good acceleration, the bike cuts out and no longer smokes. Except when I go down a hill in gear without accelerating, then it starts to smoke significantly again. The smoke is bluish in color
