Is there supposed to be a tube on both ends of the filter?, I was checking mine and there is only a tube on the upper end, the bottom end is open to the atmosphere!

P.S. My TD4 had been running perfect, but suddenly started smoking heavy black smoke and loosing power yesterday. Same problem?

Yup! the filters open to air at the bottom end ,
The smokey bits probly a split in one the inlet hoses to and from the intercooler, easy to sort once you find it .
The whole ( willo) filter comes away once you undo the screw in't botton of the housing.

hi jonier. . .the said filter [vacuum inlet breather] that looks like a in line fuel filter, has only one plastic pipe on it ,the other end is open to atmosphere, but your problem sounds like the now common inlet rubbers there are three and are large dia rubber hoses , look for ,collapsing, any small hole [normally caused by the juberly clips rubbing], if detected only cure is new hoses. . . .oh un best oh luck:)

Don't ask me when there is people like the ming on the forum. "I" was the guy who was picking his brain and everything else in order to know how to do the job. You have troubles in this, only one address I can recommend to go to: "Spend a £ and ask the guy behind the bar (in the trendy wine bar) how everything is put together, including details as how to release the clips etc. of the overflow fuel lines etc......";) :) :) :)

I did find a hole in the left hand side rubber inlet hose to the intercooler, I replaced it yesterday with significant improvement. Only very slight light smoke sometimes on acceleration now, power is totally back to normal.

You should find a hole in the left hand side rubber inlet hose to the intercooler. You'll notice significant improvement if yer change it !:rolleyes:

thank you sheriff ! had same symptoms on my 52 freelander td4, problem solved after looking at this thread. talked to engineer at shields landrover Glasgow, he said it should be changed approx every 12000 miles, and could cause further damage if not changed quickly. cheers !
