Preamble: I put a bit of redex in my tank the other day, but I don't know if it correlates or not to a bellowing exhaust in the mornings. I might just not have noticed it before.

Question: When I start my landy in the morning and rev it up, there's loads of smoke. However, when I set off driving there's none, nor throughout the day. What's that all about then?
 
I get much the same thing (white smoke) - though perhaps not to the same degree.
Something to do with oil leaking into the combustion chamber while the engine is at rest I think.
Hopefully somebody with more experience will confirm or refute.. ;)
 
Even in good fettle, most/many 2.5/200/300 tdi engines will give a good puff of smoke on start up. When cold the combustion of fuel is not as complete and some unburnt fuel goes out the exhaust. Any oil that leaks past the valve guide seals will also be burnt in the first few minutes.

that would have a bueish tinge white can be water and unburnt fuel due to cold engine/ low compression,plus fuel injected before it fires
 
A good rule of thumb , White is unburnt fuel, White with a sweet smell is coolant, Black is over fueling (soot) and Blue is oil. A lot of it depends on when its actually smoking. Unburnt fuel on an old diesel is quite common on startup but you could check your glow plugs. My old TD fogs up the driveway first thing in the morning and my plugs are well overdue a change.

Does it start like a lister single catching as well ? mines fogged up the street pre 200tdi conversion subsequent strip down revealed two cracked piston crowns.
 
It does, but Im pretty sure its just heater plugs. My last TD had 3 bad pistons and ran like a sewing machine.

Yeah it does a bit. Well, I put my foot down and it gradually climbs to the right rev for the right pressure on accelerator. Only in the morning though, Othe time during day, right rev to foot pressure if that makes sense. Hope it's not an engine job. It's supposed to have had a strip and build, shaving the alloy head.

you only skim heads it is necessary its best not too and theres little wrong with your engine as long as it starts quickly and doesnt churn a over for awhile first

That's good to know. It's just what the garage said they'd done before I bought it.
 
That looks a bit like SWMBO's D1 300Tdi, which I suspected is going to need valve stem seals at some point ... until I noticed that it doesn't use any oil .... so if "smokey" isn't using oil, then I wouldn't worry too much ...

My D1 300Tdi doesn't do it :confused: ... so I reckon there's considerable variation is how much smoke is chucked out ... possibly even due to how the cold start assist bit of the pump is adjusted ... :rolleyes:

As JM says in post #14 - if it starts quickly, and runs ok, then let sleeping dogs lie ;)
