Hi folks, I know I am going to get answers back i don't want to hear, but here goes!
I have a Def 90 2.5td 1990 and coming back from a bit of a road trip the oil warning light came on. So filled it up as the oil level was low. By time I got home oil leaking out from air filter dump plug and smike coming from engine bay, so replaced air filter and clean up the casing. Started the engine after swapping out air filter and smoke still remains, infact like a second exhaust!..Lifted the oil cap to the rocker cover and loads of white smoke.....Here liees my problem!!.. Fixing electrics I am fine with, engines forget it...hopeless, but thinking cylinder head. Any ideas and next course of action..

Cheers

Yeah i am kinda heading that way as well. However can anyone anyone give me some pointers to check before I lay the engine to rest. As I said crap when it comes to engines, but still plenty of power in it and clinging onto the hope that it is repairable rather than replacing the whole thing!

19j engines (2.5td) are notorious for dying in exactly the way you described. How many miles has it done?

As has been said, your best bet now is to get a 200 tdi put in it.

114k on it - so hardly anything

New engine I reckon say £500 and the cost for someone to put it in.. Might be better going for Uk scrappage and looking out for a new one, which is a shame as it is in great condition!

dont even think about the scrappage bollox stick a new motor in her shes good for another 114k then :D

Bu**er! No-one was supposed to see that one....got my beady eye on it...is local too!! Was lining it up for my next project..mutter,,,,mutter :)
Ooops  trust me to do a random ebay search. I have my eye on a couple of 110's, would love an opinion, but I may get gazzumped! Anyway.... shhhhhh. Hope you get lucky:)

near enough the same thing happened to my g reg 90 just over a 10000 mile mark. used about 2 litres of oil a day air filter was full of the **** and it smoked more than me. its called crankcase pressure where the engine is over breathing its own sump oil. so effectially its running on its own oil as well has its normal fuel through the air intake. i couldnt switch my engine off and the revs were getting faster. if left it will self destruct i think its called desiel engine run away . put a disco 200 or 300 in problem solved

May just be a value seal of head gasket.

If its blowing oil into the air filter this is a sign of back pressure from the engine. Firstly remove the pipe that comes from the top of the oil filler to the air filter box, and plug the connector with the air filter box with something to prevent crap getting sucked into the engine.

Are you loosing coolant as well?????

Once the pipe is off , if its still smoking out of the exhaust/oil filer then you may need to remove the cylinder head. One of three things has likely happened

1) Head gasket has gone

2) Valve seal has gone

1+2 are easy enough to fix

3) A piston has cracked/ piston ring gone -

3 is more difficult to fix, although by the time you have the head off not that a major problem as all you need to do is remove the sump (engine can stay in) undo the two big end bolts, and push the offending piston out the top, put some new rings on it (after degalsing the bore) and put it back in (with the aid of a piston ring compressor)

If you want ot check for 2 or 3 without removing the head then you could get a compression guage and test the four cylinders.

p.s. the 19j is not that bad realy - its just what it is

You've got to weigh up the time and expense of repairing your existing engine against the time and cost of putting a 200tdi in. If you can find someone local with a tdi powered landy (90/110/or a disco even) ask em to take you for a spin in it. Your mind will be made up pretty quick I think. The 19J engine is gutless even when in good condition and even if you spend money on a top end rebuild you'll be doing it again in no time. If you plan on keeping the vehicle long term there's only one solution.

I can't believe the engine went for that!. Doesnt seem right, not even a recon unit, just straight out a wagin... I reckon this might be relisted...
