hi i have had this problem a few times its a 90 and sometimes it would not crank and smoke would come through the dash
i have removed the clocks and found the ignition wiring to be red hot and showing signs of cable burn
my thoughts are that the ignition barrel is sticking on the glow plugs stage
has anyone had this themselves
cheers mike

Start by checking the earths as that sounds like a likely start. I found the earths aren't great so clean up the ones you have on and then got to a motor factor and buy a couple more and put them on to the chassis and the engine block straight back to the battery

Sounds like you're in serious danger of a full on fire. You should get that checked out as a priority I'd say.

The glow pugs are timed, so not hard wired to a key position, and in any case, even if they were on all the time, there is no good reason whatsoever for smouldering or hot wires.

If that were mine, I really wouldn't drive it until the problem was found and fixed.

Any chance you can identify the hot/burnt wires? I.e. what colour are they?
