I've been having an on going battle to get to the bottom of my freelander TD4's smoking problem.
It first started as stalling just after start up then difficulty starting followed by a cloud of white smoke.
Local Indy diagnosed 2 completely knackered injectors and the other 2 as borderline. I decided bite the bullet and change out all 4 for brand new injectors.
Picked the car up and no more stalling and no more smoke on start up. Great I thought, until the wife who was following me home in her car told me it was kicking out blue / white smoke as I drove
Took it for a test drive and looking in the mirrors I could see that if I held it in a low gear and drove for more than 20 seconds or so it started smoking but on normal driving I couldn't really notice any smoke.
Took it home and did a fast idle test and at 2k revs it started belting out white smoke (with a tinge of blue). Gutted to say the least after spending almost £1k to get all 4 injectors changed!
Been reading that the smoking at 2k revs seems to be a common problem. Noticed the mention of a stuck thermostat which got me thinking....my temp gauge never moves past about a quarter on the gauge but as the heater seems to be working ok I'd assumed it was a faulty gauge (I did change temp sensor in the block but no change).
I'm now wondering if my thermostat is stuck open and could be a cause of the smoking?
Wife wants me to sell it and get something else as the bills are racking up but I really want to get to the bottom of it and fix it!

That's the mysterious 2K misfire. It's been the cause of much pain over the years. Mine does the exact same thing and I just ignore it.
Is the EGR valve blanked by any chance?

I saw the video clip of yours nodge on an old thread and mine is exactly the same at 2k revs

The thermostat isn't working as the temperature not climbing over 1/4 is the common symptom.
It's unlikely to be the cure to the misfire, but won't be doing the MPG any good.

Try changing out the glow plugs, I know a lot of people think we do not need them in our country, but they do make a difference when new ones are added, I have seen this on both FL1 and on Rover 75.

Add a inline stat (Gates TH01489) is your FL an Auto or Manual, the later is easier to do so I am informed, try re-instating a fully working EGR

Yes it is! Well it's bypassed.
I've got a theory that the EGR bypass is the cause.

I've seen loads like it, and all have had an EGR bypass fitted.

I found using 10w40 oil and changing the crankcase filter every 6K miles reduced the blue smoke from the exhaust, but the misfire remains.

Glow plugs are all brand new Bosch plugs only fitted recently so all good there.
Mine is a manual so might try the inline stat. I still have the EGR so will try reinstating it

Crank case filter has only just been changed but it is due an oil change. I'll also put the EGR back on and see if it helps

I assume that stat is just inserted into the top hose?
Specs say it's 43mm wide, I thought the hose was only 32mm?

Just noticed this:
https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-ro...-td4-2000-rpm-misfire-and-smoke-issue.298625/

No idea if it is relevant or useful - but worth considering??

I remember that thread. That was when my TD4 was being particularly annoying with its 2K misfire. My EGR is still blanked and I do get a 2K misfire on light or trailing throttle, most noticeable when the box is in 4th with the TC locked.
I've never revisited the cause as I just live with it. However in the new year I am going to lathe up a plug for the EGR exhaust connection, with small hole in it. I'm hoping this will bleed a small amount of exhaust into the inlet so giving some EGR function.
I'm still convinced that the EDC is somehow confused by removing the EGR completely, which gives rise to the misfire. I believe the turbo is fluttering on and off boost while the misfire is happening, which is the primary cause of the hunting and the smoke to being produced.

Just noticed this thread and thought I would share my past experience with a TD4 Freelander. Mine was a 2004 model, I had blanked off the EGR with a full kit and I only experienced the misfire once. I don't think I ever really identified the actual cause, but the only thing I changed was the vacuum pipe.. I replaced it as it seemed very loose where it fitted on the engine, the new one was much tighter to put back on, so I assumed that it wasn't airtight as I never had the misfire ever again!
This may have rectified mine, or I was just very very lucky! :D

All vac pipes have been changed on mine so I know it's definatly not that

Have you also checked the vacuum reservoir? They tend to get brittle and can start to crack, especially where the pipes connect, causing a lack of vacuum pressure!

Don't know if this helps but round town I do get the miss fire not to bad tho but if it take the old girl on a run to my daughters about 60 miles away then the miss fire has gone, my egr is also blanked off . We will be over there again in a few weeks I will let you how she behaves or not
