Hi everyone

My 2003 Freelander 1 with a TD4 engine is producing some nasty smelling exhaust emissions, (not a typical diesel smell), misfires slightly when not under load, (30MPH on the flat) and occasionally plumes black smoke but stamping on the throttle a few times stops the smoke.

I'm thinking a faulty injector but would welcome any advice from someone who knows more, and that wouldn't be hard.

A sticking EGR valve is more likely, when thick black smoke is produced.

Yup, take the EGR off and clean it, do the manifold at the same time if possible.
Check the vacuum hose to the EGR as well.
