hi all

I'm wondering if anyone can please help me find out why my 300 stinks. It's clocked just over 100k, which I believe is true, it's well serviced and runs well. It's got an egr blank, cat removed and I cleaned out the inlet manifold when I did the gasket. It doesn't have excessive smoke but when I'm stood near it on tick over she really has that old Diesel engine pong

Any ideas please folks

Cheers

Hi, Might be worth checking fuel lines etc for leaks and giving the engine bay a good clean. That will help to detect leaks easier too.

Is the smell from the engine itself ie diesel/exhaust leak or from the exhaust system?
Is the crank breather system standard or has it been modded?

Ah the resident comedians...that's why I love this place haha

All lines are good and engine bay is clean, yeah sorry never said it's the actual exhaust fumes that stink when I'm stood outside her, and the breather setup is standard...is there a good modification for this?

Cheers

Smelly 300, weren't they part of the Spartans group who went into battle after a curry fight and a popadom. English still carry that tradition to this day.:D:rolleyes:. Could be the Diesel polluted with water bacteria source when you last filled up. Try if can take some of the fuel from the tank bottom and top to see if any difference. You will need to change the filter.

Ha yeah sumat like that

I was in the tank not long since expecting to find poo in the bottom but it was like new, and its smelt the same all the time I've had it (nearly 2 years). It smells like an old tractor that's breathing heavy with that really potent smell that irritates ya nose

Well cheap stuff first which is check the pump timing, if its timed late it wont burn all the fuel, could also be slack cambelt messing up the timing, many yrs ago 300s had issues with cam belt and inj pump alignment woth looking at timing chestd rain hole and seeing if theres any black dust, think tensioner was modified a couple of times as well, then its injector test/replace time, could be the inj pump itself but thats the last port of call as expensive.

Re the breather I was just wondering if someone had modded it so it breathed to atmosphere and thats what you could smell.

Cheers for that.

Il check that when I get chance, its a 98my so should have the later setup on and I've also got a cam belt kit in stock but never had chance to fit it yet but will check timing for now. I found something about the breather pot can pack up but I don't know wot it does, does it just bung up

I cut one of the cyclone breathers up out of curiosity and its just a little rubber flap and a light coil spring and I cant see it causing any smoke issues, newer cars yes but old school land rover no.
