Looking at the thread about stolen spare wheels and got me thinking.
At work we use smart water to mark our computers and electronics. It's an invisible fluid with micro dots suspended inside with a tiny number printed on every little dot that is individual to every bottle. It's like dna in a bottle. The fluid lights up under uv light.
It's registered with the police and any item they suspect is stolen gets scanned by the police.
It's pretty cheap stuff, so what about marking our cars?
A time dot on wheels, panels, suspension, every part of out landys could be easily marked.
Could help the thieves be identified for selling stolen parts.
What you guys think?
 
I'm not too sure but it is pretty hard wearing. You apply it to corners, vents on computers. Places that would be difficult to remove if the thief became aware that it was there. It's a good deterrent and has a 100% success rate in court.

This stuff is used widely on farm machinery and construction plant so I'd imagine that it must survive quite well. But like most marking systems I'd imagine that you put where this is unlikely to be a great issue.

Also don't forget the old ultra violet marking pens, after all any of these marking systems will only work if plod find them. I wonder if many criminals would think to scan a nicked wheel with an ultra violet lamp.

When my dad bought his scania r380 580 v8, his insurance company gave him this, not long after his yard gate hinges were cut and the tractor unit stolen. Luckily enough somebody nearby reported it being driven dangerously and after a few hours chase with a helicopter the police recovered the vehicle, written off. Smart water was still on the parts, but what good is it when the things smashed to pieces? People who steal things dont treat them in the way we would, but it would be a good piece of evidence to identify whos landy it was, and convict the crims, Sam
 
Ive already smartwatered my galv chassis (and house belongings). In fact ive almost painted the rear crossmember with the stuff:)
 
Smart Water isn't designed for vehicular application. Ask the manufacturers directly and they will admit it's pointless really. We did a bit of work looking into it at work and conlcuded it isn't up to the job.

i have got it on my motorbike.dont see any reason it should not be used on any vehicle tbh.
 
as gemsdad says, I also have it on my bikes...

Smart water and datatag have been used on motorbikes for ages.... but they work as its widely known that bike parts have this.

Police can do regular checks on bikes during bike meetings, which happen all over the country during the summer months near known biking roads /pubs / meeting places...

If this was to be used on land rovers, how would a cop know which to check?

When there's bike meetings, they just go around with their scanning thingys
 
As their website says

"It can be used to code all sorts of items such as jewellery, ornaments, electrical items and even your motor vehicle"

could be a viable option, especially if there is a sticker in the window. Even the sticker on its own may prove a deterrant...SmartWater - Forensic coding for your home :D
 
Better to have it and not need it than want it and not have it!!!
I have a UV light key fob for such circumstances!!! :D
 
Whatever happened to those window glass ectching kits you used to get, You don't see so many cars marked like that anymore??
