Auber Instruments. www.auberins.com

I ordered this one from ebay at A$60 + A$15 postage.

Its advertised as:

DIGITAL EGT THERMOMETER PYROMETER W/ Probe

It came pre-configured and with probe ready to go.

ebay item 190286130870

Works great.

I had to route the sensor cable via the passenger side grommet in the bulkhead right behind the washer water container, then once inside the vehicle behind the glove compartment (I took the door off), then across to the drivers side to reach where I mounted it. If you try to go throught the bulkhead on the the drivers side, the sensor cable is too short.

I have read this whole thread with great interest. I have made some small adjustments to the diaphragm and smoke screw and felt the improvements. What made the biggest improvement for me however (not seen mentioned yet) is a very small advancement of the injector timing.
I did the timing belt with the pins etc and have been driving it like that for a long time.
I then made a minute advancement and the difference was amazing.
I removed the round cover over the front of the timing chest where the injector pump is.
You see 3 screws in slots. By loosening slightly those three screws and turning the plate (with the screws) about 15 thou clockwise you can effect a very slight advancement. Mark around the screws before moving anything.
The sound of mine did not really change (rattle) but if it had I would know its too far advanced.
Car accelerates better and pulls up hills much better. I live in the mountains and I really feel the difference.
Its possible that mine was a bit retarded before I started but I am really pleased with the result.
This adjustment can be done scientifically using the timing tools from the early VW diesels and using a dial indicator plugged into the other end of the pump. Stock I think is 1.5mm and mine is just a little more.

Hello Piper109,

Could you perhaps post some photos of where the cover is, and what screws I am looking for ? as I'd like to give it a go.

I'm also considering a manual boost controller valve, once I find out under what conditions the wastegate bypasses the turbo? I don't know why it is necessary to bypass the turbo ?

Looking at the front of the engine timing cover, l.h. side, you will see a round plate held on by 3 screws. If you have aircon its behind the belt tensioner. Remove that and you will see the drive sprocket of the Injector pump. There are 3 bolts which allow for fine tuning of the timing. Basically you use those bolts when changing the timing belt and you get the locking pin into the flywheel and the timing pin into the IP. The bolts help you make sure the timing pin goes in properly. Read the timing instructions on line. Loosening those screws and turning the IP a very small amount clockwise will advance your injector timing. Mark around the screws before starting so you can see how much you have moved them. If you know what a contact breaker points gap looks like, that's how much I moved mine (about 15 thou or 0.4 mm).

Have you guys got a video of how to do it? im not to good when it comes to these things and seeing as its the engine i don't want to c*ck things up!
Cheers

Off school!?! These drivers are getting younger!

I'm not a mechanic no, but am capable with a set of spanners.

As for your 'school' comment, I'm guessing your disco isn't road legal currently? As you really need to boot it up the road to test smoke etc

its a defender 90 1995 300tdi, when i say school i mean college.
it is currently road legal, just is sluggish getting through the gears.:)

Hello,

I recently carried out the fuel mods on my 1995 300tdi, and they made a big improvement. Thanks for all the advice.
I just received the brass regulation valve I ordered on ebay and fitted it between the waste gate and turbo outlet. I wound the screw all the way in, (closed off the line to start with).
I took it for a quiet drive, and it made no obvious difference, so I was about to write that its not doing its job. But on the way home, I put my foot down and well, it took off like a rocket (well faster than ever before anyway) and hit 1.5bar for an instant. Its the first time I heard my tubo scream.
My next job is to wind the screw out to limit the boost a bit lower (trial and error adjustment).
Previously it was limited to 1.1bar and I'm hoping the turbo can deal with 1.3bar (even with 280km on the clock). I've got the exhaust gas temp meter fitted and I monitor it, so thats the extent of mods for me (unless the turbo blows up).

Great post this. I am eager to try on my 200 tdi auto. It is worthy of a You Tube video I reckon, if anyone has a camera. The photos are great, but a video with commentary. Could be a big hit. :)

Man speaketh truth, YouTube is the future!

I would totally do it but I'm not sure I'm qualified, I own v8 and when I tried this on my dads 300 I'm not sure i got it right! :p

Bet there is some one on here with the know how and a video camera. There's already a lot of landy stuff on You Tube but a tech/ video section on the forum would be cool.

Hi lads, sorry for such a noob question but basically I want to do this mod but my injector pump doesn't have the small cap so does this mean I have the later 300tdi with electronic fuel control?? Can't I just take the cover off instead and ajust diaphram/star wheel?? Again sorry for noob question but my disco only came with v5 nold mots so unsure what model I have.... its a n reg 300tdi is all I knw, lol... cheers lads....c

Hi mate,if you have an auto with EDC then this mod of the fuel pump does not apply. Bear in mind that you already have 120 bhp instead of the manual box 111bhp.

If you want more response and haven't yet done it, change the catted downpipe for ESR2297 non-cat downpipe - make a noticeable difference.
