Switch of the engine and ignition and check from the negative (-) terminal on the battery to a good clean point on the engine with a multimeter set to ohms - a reading of 0 shows that you have a good earth between engine and body back to the battery.

Daz Hi yes tried that and it's fine, however I have just found the alternator is siezed solid
and the starter is trying to run the belt over the pulley poor thing,

Pitch black last night and the bloody street lamp at my drive was out, anyway alternator off and onto the kitchen worktop, WD40, 24mm socket, some grunt, trapped finger and it's free, weird or what, ?? first couple of mm and the bearing was grinding like mad, now its fine no noise, rumble, or drag fitted it 9 AM this morning and it's running fine, I am going to take it off this week-end and replace the bearings
