Hello all, I hope somebody can help because I'm at the end of my tether.
My 110 has developed a clunk when turning at low speeds it is most noticeable, seems to happen when the weight of the vehicles shifts,
All the bushes are poly & fine there is no play in any of the steering components, changed the steering drag link roll bar, rear anti roll bar links, checked all torque settings, wheel bearings, swivels, shocks all fine with no play. I did notice last night that when you turn the wheel to the left the track rod has been catching on the track rod bracket fitted to front axle, removed the bracket but I've still got the clunk. Has anybody got any ideas as to what is causing it. Thanks.
 
Have you checked if anything is loose and just moving about when you corner? when I got my 90 the bracket holding the battery in place was a bit loose so it rocked an made a noise. Any loose components in the door??

Doors have been stripped and welded over the last couple of months, they are solid, not the battery either. I've removed everything else inside bar the front seats, it's definitely coming from below, axle/chassis area and feels to be more offside.

Another thing that might be causing a noise on turning is the CV joints in the front axle. They're usually a repeated click or clunk as they rotate, but I suppose they could yield a single clunk.

Where there's slack in the steering bearings, bushes or wheel bearings it doesn't necessarily show up as slack if you give them a casual wobble. Sometimes it needs a good heave or even wobbling with a lever to get it to show up. So be vigorous.
 
Swivel pins or bearing? Or maybe A frame? Hard to find play without getting her off the ground sometimes.
 
I had something like this on my 90, turned out while green laning it had landed heavily on the sliders and had ruined the thread on the bolt that held the body to the chassis, so it was everything moving!

I would imagine that it is not the same problem but it shows that you have to look everywhere!
 
Cheers all, I had her on stands last night and had a 2ft pry bar to all the bush joints, gearbox mounts etc QED checked for play in wheels and swivels, everything is as tight as a drum. I will look over the chassis tonight, that part isn't the best I have to admit I'm chasing the rot the worst is now out with new steel in its place but a galvy one will be required before the year is out.
 
Worth checking the brake pads/disks a worn disk can cause the pads to rattle in the callipers.

After poly bushing everything last year we still had a few clonks going on then we was rear ended and had to replace the chassis no more clonks a rotten chassis will just twist and twist till it starts to crack and split, check the top of the chassis under the tub and rear spring seats
 
Not strictly related to turning, but have you checked you UJ s for excess play? I've just replaced two on my front prop. I was getting vibration but I did get the occasional clunk.
 
I was getting a nasty clunk/crunching noise plus a stiffness and jerking in the steering and it turned out my front diff was shot. Took it off and discovered all hell had broken loose inside. Literally.
In it's early stages its symptoms of failure were not easily recognized as diff related.
 
I may be able to help! I have been in the process of replacing front turrets, and ran out of time to finish the job but had to pop the vehicle 1 mile up the road to collect a work van for the next day. In the process of preparing for a turret change i'd snapped 1 of the bolts off the retaining ring, which meant the front right shock turret was only clamped by 2 bolts on the inside edge. Every time I went over the slightest bump I got a knocking noise, assuming that the shock is shifting side to side a bit under compression now.

Off to fix it today, maybe check that all 4 bolts are intact and tight - For some reason both of mine only had 3 in the first place... the stress of buying a new (old) 1985 90....

That's interesting LF - did this manifest as resistance/tension on full lock? I'm just about to swap out my CV's (just about to buy as it's pay day today) as that's what I'm getting with some clunking, but if I stop and reverse or 'unwind' the steering a little then the tension or resistance eases off again. I've not looked at the front diff, so that might be worth checking I guess..
 
So far lads I've not had a chance as I've been rot busting on the chassis for the last 2 weekends. When I dropped the old girl off the axle stands at the back I actually heard the noise then, so I'll be looking at A frame ball joint and all other rear end stuff and work forward. The joys of Defenders.
