hi everyone, bit of a newcomer, got the rangie bug badly, hoping someone can help me with my 99 4.6 vogue, trying to find out about checking for slipping liner,
as I understand it...... Liners do not "drop", as many people describe. They loosen after a severe overheating episode, and go UP. The ID of the head gasket is slightly larger than the OD of the liner, so they are able to rise above the block by the thickness of the headgasket. Often , you can hear a loose liner.
Blown head gaskets leave lots of tell-tale signs. They can occur in many combinations, and not always the same.
1. Look for one or two (adjacent cylinders) spark plugs that look extremely clean when compared to the rest.
2. Unexplained loss of coolant, with no apparant leaks and none mixed with oil
(Oil/water mixing is not that common with blown head gaskets because the water passageway from block to head is nowhere near the oil passageway. It does occur more often when there's a leaky intake manifold gasket,
3. Detectable antifreeze odour from the exhaust, together with what appears to be white smoke. Get a sniff test carried out.
4. Hyrdocarbons above 10-15ppm present in the radiator or expansion tank.
"Legacy Motors" - I take it you are a "professional"?
cheers for that, i am no professional mechanic, love my rangey, just got lucky with my 3rd one, all the rest died expensive deaths!!, this one is a goodun, needed someones opinion on the liner issue, no overheating issues in 1 year ownership, no coolant losses at all, no smells or smoke, just a tappity/lifter noise, been told slipped liners sound like this??
