Hi guys, i own a 1999 RangeRover 2.5 DSE Auto, its a great motor, i have owned it for about a month and have covered just over 2000 miles in it.
I have noticed a (Very) slight tapping noise when i start from cold, it dont do it on tick over.....it only seems to do when in drive and under pressure. after i've travelled half a mile or so its fine. the oil light goes straight out as soon as it starts and theres no smoke or other strange noises, i was thinking an oil and filter change might cure it (as there seems to be a big gap in the service history and looks like it aint had an oil change in 20K).
Any thoughts????

Could be a hydraulic cam follower pumping up as redhand says, get the engine up to working temperature then oil change and new filter while hot.

surely warm not HOT, very dangerous, very nasty injuries from hot oil!!!

If the oil hasn't been changed for 20K, then I'd get it as hot as possible.

I'd think nothing of changing the oil in a lorry that just come off the motorway, mainly because I trained as a commercial vehicle mechanic.

I know where your coming from with regards to getting the oil as thin as possible before draining, and providing you have the right kit to do the job, but underneath a car, on your driveway, undoing a hot sump plug, letting hot oil drain from the sump, possibly running down your sleeve etc is a bit dodgy, then sods law always says the wind will pick up just after you have started the job

The main problem people have is not having a suitable oil drain tray with enough capacity to take all the oil at once, I have a steel drain tray that holds about 25 litres.

The main danger of oil burn is when the sump plug is removed slowly away from the path of the oil, undo the sump plug holding it against the sump when undone a quick move to the side, the wind doesn't normally effect draining the oil until the last trickle.

not as easy as that if the sump plug is located onthe bottom of the sump though.

Its gummed-up hydraulic tappets (lifters). Add a bottle of Wynn's 'Hydraulic Valve Lifter Treatment' This costs around £5 and will clean the lifters. After about 500 miles change the oil, flush, and refill with a quality synthetic ie: Mobil 1.
